   SUBWAY TO SALLY - PINKOSTAR
Soundgarden - Dortmund (D)
April 8th 2003

Not too much time passed since I got to see Subway To Sally live the last time. What did make a difference though was that in the meantime the latest album "Engelskrieger" had been released and I was curious to see how the new (controversially discussed) songs come out live and how they were being accepted by the fans.

But before Subway To Sally entered the stage it was PINKOSTAR's turn to warm up the audience. And I must say that this was probably the most pleasant support band for Subway To Sally I've seen so far. I've always had trouble with Subway To Sally's support bands but this time I was really relieved to hear Pinkostar. Judging by the name I had expected some alternative rock and in the end I got US style alternative rock indeed. Something in the vein of Matchbox 20, Creed, Nickelback and the likes. Nothing I'm too fond of but it certainly doesn't hurt and I've heard much worse bands than Pinkostar. It was nothing spectacular though and so the crowd could not resist to shout "Blut, Blut, Räuber saufen Blut" (I won't complain about this tune again here) towards the end of the set.

So what's the news with SUBWAY TO SALLY live? Not too much really. The band is famous for their great live shows and with the immense live experience they have there simply cannot be a real bad Subway To Sally gig. This one was no exception. Even if you're not really in a mood for seeing a show, as soon as Subway To Sally start playing you are most likely to be captured.
Anyway, in this time of war in Iraq vocalist Eric entered the stage having the word "Peace" written all over his forehead and off they went with the almost-titletrack "Geist Des Kriegers". All in all, Subway To Sally played 10 out of the 11 new songs - which can be viewed as a statement that they decided the heavier and less folky/medieval way and want to stick to this. As much as I like the new stuff as well and as good as the new tracks worked live - it became obvious that a lot of the fans almost waited for the first older track in the setlist, "Mephisto".

As for every tour some optical changes were being made. More lightshow, less pyros was the new concept, complemented by the usual fire-spitting. The stage also got a new design and setup: the new "Engelskrieger" logo was used as a sort of backdrop, surrounded by a circle of lights. There was not just a single plain stage but several levels, so Eric did not necessarily have to stay at the very front of the stage but he also got a microphone stand a level up, right behind the drumkit. Drummer David got a mobile drum riser which didn't rise but allowed him to move to the front of the stage and back again during some songs. It's stuff like that which make a show interesting even if you have seen a band a lot of times before (like I have in this case). Be it a certain stageacting by each band member or the occasional appeal for the infamous scream ("...und der Schrei!") where the fans are called to shout their lungs out - Subway To Sally would have become too predictable if they had not invented something new for the show.

I personally was pleased to hear a lot of the new stuff because it was new and something fresh. Of course some old classics were missed but I've seen those before and so at least I can handle not having heard them this time. Judging by the reactions of the crowd not everybody shared my opinion because it was much more being cheered for the old hits. Then again, this is happening often to other bands as well, so I don't think there's too much to be bothered about for Subway To Sally.
