   STRATOVARIUS - SYMPHONY X - THUNDERSTONE
Stadthalle - Langen (D)
April 17th 2003

My expectations concerning the headliner Stratovarius were mixed. On the one hand I know, that the (mostly) Scandinavian band is able to do a stunning live-show (as seen in 2000 on the "Infinite"-tour), but on the other hand, their latest output "Elements Pt. 1" isn't my favourite and I was afraid that they would play (too) many songs of that album.

Well, it started exactly on time, at 7.30 pm with the Finnish newcomers THUNDERSTONE, a so called "Stratovarius-clone". But if I look at the circumstances of the young guys, they released their first self-titled record last year, they did a good job as the opener on that show. Unfortunately, the band did nothing of a (hopefully) forthcoming album, but they played six songs of the debut. The highlight of the tight-presenting band was "Will To Power" and the speed-number "Virus". Thunderstone might be one of the big bands in the future ... we'll see ...

Setlist:
Let The Demons Free
Virus
World's Cry
Me, My Enemy
Will To Power
Eyes Of A Stranger

For me, SYMPHONY X was the main reason to attend this gig. They are a band I had never seen before, and they lived up to my expectations!! I cannot tell if it was the genius guitar-play of Michael Romeo or the unbelievable stageacting of Russel Allen, but those points were great. I could expect the stageacting of Russel, because I saw him with Star One/Ayreon last year, and he seems to be like that always when he is on stage. Symphony X played only one hour, but they did a great job here too, one tight band. My highlights were "Inferno (Unleash The Fire)" and "King Of Terrors" from their current output "The Odyssey" and "Out Of The Ashes" from "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy". At the end of the show, I could catch the plectron of Michael Romeo, which gets a special place in my personal gallery ;-)

Setlist:
Inferno (Unleash The Fire)
Wicked
King Of Terrors
Communion And The Oracle
Smoke And Mirrors
Of Sins And Shadows
Out Of The Ashes

Then it was time for STRATOVARIUS. They opened as I expected with their single "Eagleheart" with some nice pyros. Then they did "Find Your Own Voice" and I was impressed. Timo Kotipelto really could do those extremely high vocals, though it was kinda hard to understand what he was singing, but he did it very well! Then I disappeared from the first row, because the sound wasn't too good anymore, it was only LOUD! And I had to write down the tracklist. Meanwhile I did some chatting with Symphony X-singer Russel Allen. But still I was watching Stratovarius play, and they did a lot from "Episode" ("Speed Of Light", "Father Time", "Forever", "Will The Sun Rise"). Some songs they played I didn't want to hear, such as "Soul Of A Vagabond" and "Elements", which was from my point of view very long and almost boring, but all in all I was happy with the headliner. There was only one song of "Infinite", which was "Hunting High And Low", and only half a song of "Destiny" (the titletrack, in a medley with "Fantasia"), but at last I got to hear "Black Diamond", my favourite song of all of Stratovarius, and at the end there was a really "blowing away"-pyro.

Setlist:
Intro
Eagleheart
Find Your Own Voice
Kiss Of Judas
Speed Of Light
Soul Of A Vagabond
Destiny/Fantasia
Father Time
Medley (Wheel Of Time, Dreamspace, Tears Of Ice, We Hold The Key and another song)
Forever
Stratofortress
Elements
Will The Sun Rise
Season Of Change
Paradise
Hunting High And Low
Black Diamond
