   NO MERCY FESTIVAL 2004
Cannibal Corpse Miche/Brian 013 - Tilburg (NL)
April 12th 2004

We woke up very early that day for the festival, prepared lunch and took off at 9:00. It took us two hours to get there. It was only 11:00 when we arrived, we were so excited because our favorite band was headlining that night. The weather was beautiful, so we didn't have any problem staying outside; we were the first ones there. We got to see and meet a few bands before the show and we got to see them unload the busses. It was a very nice morning, not too crowded and not boring at all. The doors were opened at 15:00 and we got to go inside around 15:30. Despite all of the people who got in before us, we still managed to get a spot in the front row (of the main venue, we didn't see any of the bands in the small one); we sat at the front row waiting for the first band to start...

Exhumed Miche/Brian Outrageous gore metal band EXHUMED was the first band to open No Mercy Festival 2004. Although the place was empty at the beginning of the show, it soon filled up and was packed with metalheads. They played some of their old songs and also some new songs from their latest cd "Anatomy Is Destiny", including one of my all time favorite songs: "Decrepit Crescendo". We were two of the lucky ones who got to experience this festival up close (we were standing in the front row), but because of that we also got pretty bruised from the people in the moshpit: and this was only the first band!!! This band really knows how to get the crowd going!!! Exhumed played a very brutal set, it's a pitty that they only played a few songs. They were very entertaining and made very good contact with the crowd, they loved what they saw!! This is really a kick-ass metal band, for those of you who aren't familiar with their work, GO CHECK THEM OUT!!!!

Vomitory Miche/Brian Next band to own the stage was the Swedish death metal band VOMITORY, another favorite band of mine. I heard and read so much of them and I got to know very much through cds and magazines but nothing beats seeing these guys performing live. They started and finished their set with their most brutal songs and left the crowd wanting for more. The pit was awesome, some songs were too fast to keep up with (headbanging). I also got to push a few guys in the moshpit, it was fun!! The crowd loved them and we all had a good time. Unlike Exhumed they got to stay on the stage for a longer while, giving the fans a few extra minutes of some good old Swedish death metal. And yes, I must say that what I've heard and read of them are true, they are a great band.

Carpathian Forest Miche/Brian The only black metal band for that evening was CARPATHIAN FOREST. I don't really know much of them, so this was a treat for me, since I also like black metal and since I was curious to see them. Their music is melodic yet heavy. I loved them despite the fact that the singer seemed a little off: he dropped the microphone once and stumbled quite a few times but that didn't keep them from putting on a great show. The singer, Nattefrost, armed with an inverted cross in one hand and with the mic in the other, motivated the fans by constantly raising his cross and yelling: "Come On!!". The motivating paid off great because the crowd went wild!! They also made it very clear to us that they were "one with satan" (figure of speech). To sum it all up, I thought they were a very nice black metal band, I guess I found something else to listen to.

Kataklysm Miche/Brian The next band following this black metal band was Canada's very own KATAKLSYM, personally I thought they were very awesome. They performed songs like: "As I Slitter", "Serenity In Fire" and closed their set with "Shadows and Dust", that drove the crowd absolutely wild!! Their drummer, Martin, performed a hell of a drum solo after the rest of the band went off the stage (we all thought that was it, that they had finished) but then they surprised us when they came back, jumped in and began with the next song, I totally loved that one!! Music wise, they are very heavy with a bit of rhythm, so that doesn't make them sound dull. After the show Martin jumped off the stage to give his fans a handshake, he was very nice. We got to shake his hand and we got an autograph from him!! Honestly, I never knew these death metal people could be so nice, I always thought that they were evil, guess I was wrong (oops!). Hopefully I'll see them perform again very soon, I really enjoyed them!!

We got scared out of our wits, before PRO-PAIN got on stage (hahahaha). There was this very weird looking guy who started performing cowboy-songs (yeah, that's right) with an acoustic guitar. Since we didn't know them at all we thought that was them. The guy wouldn't go off the stage and that made us believe even more that he was a member of Pro-Pain. But a few minutes later the real members came on stage so that they could go on with the show. We were totally relieved when they came out; I know that everyone backstage had fun fooling the crowd. Pro-Pain was pretty good, but they didn't play our kind of music. They are more hardcore/thrash metal, but the crowd loved them: they would slam no matter what! They performed songs like "Stand Tall" and "Fuck It!" and finished their set with "Never Again" a cover from "Discharged". That song was performed by the singer and a special guest who happened to be a friend of the bands. Even though that they didn't play our kind of music, they sure know how to put on a very good show!!! I wouldn't mind seeing them again in the future.
Hypocrisy Miche/Brian
Next up: HYPOCRISY!! I didn't get to see all of their songs because I was outside talking and recieving autographs from the members of that night's headlining band: Cannibal Corpse. Luckily I got my spot back in the front row (YES!!), but I arrived right on time to see their last five songs. Hypocrisy was another fan favorite, they attracted a lot of people to the main stage. That band totally got the moshpit going. They played some old stuff and some of their latest, like "Eraser". The fans were headbanging, slamming and having a great time. Some of their songs were very heavy/brutal and some very melodic and less brutal. They have good mix of death and black metal to them, so this is a great band for the ones who like both. The band's performance was one of the best ones of the festival.

Cannibal Corpse Miche/Brian Finally, the band we've been waiting for all evening: CANNIBAL CORPSE!!! This is personally our favorite band of all! They were so good. These guys know what good old fashion death metal is all about!!! Raw, brutal and fast with lots of gore and blood, the moshpit was a killer (literally), I jumped in for a while but not that long because I was there to see the show, I wouldn't miss it for the world! They played songs like:

Dormant Bodies Bursting
Gallery Of Suicide
Unleashing The Bloodthirsty
Shredded Humans
They Deserve To Die
Vomit The Soul
Stripped, Raped and Strangled
Hammer Smashed Face
Fucked With A Knife
Devoured By Vermin
A Skull Full Of Maggots
Cannibal Corpse Miche/Brian Pounded Into Dust
The Cryptic Stench
Decency Defied
The Wretched Spawn

After the show, the bass player Alex Webster jumped off the stage to give everybody a hand. The vocalist, George, also reached out to give everybody a hand and gave me his towel (I am so proud!!!) One word to sum up their whole performance: PERFECT!!! We are looking forward to seeing more of them very soon and at No Mercy Festival 2005!!!

When receiving the autographs, George told me we could meet them outside after the show, but because we had to catch the train back home, we had to leave in a hurry. We missed it anyways and lined up taking a taxi. That was the only bad thing about that night; we didn't get to see them before they left for London. But there will be more concerts and more chances; we will definitely be there at NO MERCY 2005, no doubt about it!!!
