HAMMERFALL - MASTERPLAN - DREAM EVIL
Stadthalle - Langen (D)
February 7th 2003

As we were going to Langen on feb. 7th 2003, I thought to myself "four bands on one show, let's see how they are doing". Besides HammerFall, the headliner, who didn't interest me at all, there was Masterplan, the main reason why I went to the concert. Masterplan the new band of the two former Helloweenies, guitar-player Roland Grapow and drummer Uli Kusch, Iron Savior-bass-guitar-player Jan-S. Eckert, Gamma Ray-tour-keyboarder Axel Mackenrott and last but not least former Ark- and Beyond Twilight-vocalist Jorn Lande, and Dream Evil, a powermetal combo from Sweden who just released their 2nd album "Evilized". At a few concerts, there should be Sinner playing at special guests, but they didn't play. The reason for that was as followed: Dream Evil had to pay to play on the tour, and if Sinner played, Dream Evil must have begun at about 7.30pm, though the official beginning was 8pm, and Sinner were so fair to cancel. Besides, Dream Evil had to shorten their setlist, which wasn't too long at all. After the doors opened, at about 7.45 (officially 7), we finally came into the "Stadthalle", where we met Angel Dust fronter Dirk Thurisch, selling shirts at the merchandising area.

Well, at about 8.15 DREAM EVIL kicked off with their set, and they did quite a good job, though the singer Niklas Isfeldt acted kinda boring. But after all, it was a good gig they played, and they were content with it. Talking to them afterwards, they said they had to shorten their set, they were gonna play "Chasing The Dragon" but they weren't allowed to. Well, I only wonder why, because the bands all had about a whole week off, but they only arrived on 3 in the afternoon, that's why Dream Evil and Masterplan didn't get a soundcheck, and as we were waiting in front of the entrance, we heard HammerFall do the soundcheck ... I'd say the management kinda failed here ...

DREAM EVIL-Setlist:
1. Made Of Metal
2. The Prophecy
3. Children Of The Night
4. Fight You ´Till The End
5. Heavy Metal In The Night
6. Chosen Ones

At about 9, MASTERPLAN started, playing almost their entire self-titled debut-album. And they kicked ass!! An eye-catcher was Jan's bass-guitar, which had the form of a huge fish, enlightening whenever Jan touched it on a certain point. Axel, whenever he didn't have anything to play, he was jumping and banging around on the stage, entertaining the crowd. Starting with "Spirit Never Die", they had the crowd on their side. 2nd was "Enlighten Me", the most well-known song of them. Unfortunately, at the beginning, Roland's guitar did whatever, but didn't work, so the other 4 had to manage the first parts of the song without the guitar. But they succeeded, and Jorn definitely has the voice to switch the attraction from Roland to himself, his perfect vocals did it very well. After having played more songs of the debut, such as "Kind Hearted Light", "Heroes", where Roland sang the part of studio guest-musician Michael Kiske, "Crystal Night", "Soulburn", "Bleediing Eyes", etc (see setlist ;-) ). Roland started off with some older riffs from his time in Helloween ("Dr. Stein", "Future World"), and they played a medley including Helloween's "The Chance" and Ark's "Sunset Station" and "Sun Is Going Down". At last, they did "Crawling From Hell" and the fans were happy. For me Masterplan was the secret headliner of the tour, maybe because I don't like HammerFall too much ;-)

MASTERPLAN-Setlist:
1. Spirit Never Dies
2. Enlighten Me
3. Crystal Night
4. Heroes
5. Soulburn
6. Kind Hearted Light
7. Bleeding Eyes
8. Guitar-solo (incl "Dr. Stein" & "Future World")
9. Medley: The Chance - Sunset Station (Jorn) - Sun Is Going Down
10. Crawling From Hell

Afterwards I moved into the back of the hall waiting for Dream Evil and Masterplan to come out, talking a bit to Drik Thurisch, HAMMERFALL began. With "Riders Of The Storm". Well, almost everybody went crazy, but I didn't. In my opinion, they had no good sound at all, but I talked to some friends after the show, and they liked it a lot. Well, I cannot be objective, when it comes to a band who too often repeats itself in his own songs, so I think, objectively seen, they did a good job, but I couldn't say that. HF played for about 2 hours and I got most of the autographs I wanted, so I was happy too, and I even kinda enjoyed some of the HF songs ... ;-)
