   EVERGREY - MERCENARY
Biebob - Vosselaar (B)
De Bosuil - Weert (NL)

Evergrey © Nico Wobben After I had just attended the fabulous gig in Evergrey's hometown Gothenburg/Sweden in early October (see my other review) I now had the next chance to catch them live. Once again the Swedes came down here to play a couple of shows, this time even for two dates in Germany. So far the dates usually have been in the Netherlands and Belgium only, simply because Evergrey still have a bigger following there. Tom even said that it's like coming home playing in Vosselaar - that often have they played there already. I wonder when the Germans wake up (well, at least I'm up already.. ;)), appreciate this band more and give them the support they deserve. Just my two cents. As support act Evergrey brought the Danes Mercenary. Because of the fact that the two dates I attended were happening within three days and the setlist for both dates was pretty much alike we decided to sum up the events in one review. Marlies and Nico were with me at the gig in Vosselaar, unfortunately not in Weert. Next time I'm visiting a gig in either the Netherlands or Belgium without them I'll make sure to wear a sign or shirt saying "No, Marlies and Nico are not here" because everybody asked where they were ;) (Cora)

Mercenary © Nico Wobben So, support act MERCENARY. Musically the way they mix styles is still a bit confusing to me because sometimes they are a very melodic band that's a bit too melodic for my taste, then the next song is much darker and kicks ass. Just a matter of taste I guess and apparently they are at the very edge of what I like and don't like. But still I was pretty impressed with what I saw and heard, Nico especially liked the skilled and emotional playing of lead guitarist Martin. The good, but high pitched vocals by lead singer Mikkel were not always our thing, on the other hand bassist Kral delivered some deeper vocals or even growls to balance this out a little. Also the keyboardist and even the drummer provided backing vocals. Songs they performed included "11 Dreams", "Firesoul", "Screaming From The Heavens", "Sharpen The Edges" and "Seize The Night". Mercenary offered lots of enthusiasm, contact with the crowd and were giving 200% on stage. They were clearly surprised about the turnout and the response of the crowd in Vosselaar! I'll be happy to see more of them next April when they support Brainstorm on their first headlining tour! (Marlies)

Evergrey © Nico Wobben But on with the headliners EVERGREY. The venue in Vosselaar was quite packed and the crowd was really good too. After the usual intro they opened with "More Than Ever", my favourite kick-ass-live track from the latest album "The Inner Circle". I think it was a pretty good idea to put this song in the very beginning of the set. With a total playing time of around 1 1/2 hours each night we didn't have to miss a lot of essential tracks although there's always going to be a song or two you were hoping to hear that is not being played in the end. Still, Evergrey managed a nice mix of songs for their sets, in Vosselaar even with tracks from all their five albums. The debut is a little neglected. When in Vosselaar Tom wanted to introduce a song from "The Dark Discovery" album and some fans started to scream already, he told them to "not get too excited, maybe it's a sucky song", hehe. Oh yeah, mr Englund - your band is sooo known for sucky songs ;)

Evergrey © Sonja Göder Throughout the whole show you could see hair flying on stage and Micke -in combination with his stage wear- would win any contest if there only was one. If necessary all of the band members tried to encourage the crowd to clap their hands or sing along. The crowd in Weert was not as enthusiastic as in Vosselaar which Tom commented with that he wondered if he was in a church because it was so silent. Oh-oh, what an evil comment and not exactly a compliment for us I think :o. But with "Mark Of The Triangle" everybody woke up here too, that's for sure. Cool! When two fans in the front row in Vosselaar were talking between two songs Tom called them to "pay attention, you're paying for this". LOL! You just need to know how to keep the audience attentive, hehe. Anyway, "Mark Of The Triangle" marked the end of the regular set on both nights and the band left the stage.

Evergrey © Sonja Göder A few Evergrey (or Everbeer)-shouts later Rikard and Jonas returned to start performing "When The Walls Go Down" which (from what I've heard) came somewhat surprising for a couple of visitors. Especially during "Recreation Day" on both nights and "The Essence Of Conviction" in Weert it once again became obvious how much the backing vocals of Henrik and Rikard have improved over the time, really well done.
For the final track "The Masterplan" Evergrey are currenty doing this sing-along kinda "game" in which the audience is divided into two halves and each half is asked to sing "(We are all a part of, forced to live within, conspiracy of ages) THE MASTERPLAAAAAN" as loud as possible, trying to top the other half. Even parts of the band seem to take part in this competition and become rather ambitious because Henrik disappointedly shouted "Come on, this is MY side!" when he thought the half on his side of the venue wasn't singing loud enough and needed to improve.
And then the shows were already over and the band waved good-bye. Hopefully we'll get to see Evergrey again next year in support of live album and/or DVD!! (Cora)
