   EVERGREY
Evergrey © Nico Wobben Biebob - Vosselaar (B)
September 12th 2003

http://www.evergrey.net

EVERGREY just came back from a tour in the US with Hate Eternal, Arch Enemy and The Black Dahlia Murder, a performance on ProgPower USA and a couple of gigs in Iceland, when they immediately headed to the south again to play at a festival in France. On their way they stopped in Vosselaar for a gig, where Xystus would've opened up if their bassist hadn't left the band the day or so before. So, no opening band, but all the more Evergrey:) They started shortly after nine with "Recreation Day" and it was followed by 90 minutes of greatest hits of all albums. What a setlist! We didn't write it down, but we can sum up what we remember: "Blinded", "End Of Your Days", "Rulers Of The Mind", "State Of Paralysis", "Encounter", "Fragments", "Your Darkest Hour", "Blackened Dawn", "Mark Of The Triangle", "Trilogy Of The Damned", "I'm Sorry", "Nosferatu", "The Great Deceiver", "Solitude Within" and "The Masterplan".

Evergrey © Nico Wobben The guys seem to be tighter than ever, all the touring is paying off. Tom Englund's voice is also getting better and better, even though it may vary day by day. I thought he sounded great this night, but a friend who was at ProgPower USA said he sounded a bit tired and was even better in Atlanta. The new and still very young drummer Jonas Ekdahl, who used to be Evergrey's drumtech (formerly known as "Slave" because of the "Slave" shirt he used to wear a lot;)), adds a new dosis of youthful enthusiasm to the band and I'm still amazed by Rikard Zander's input on keys. What a great move it was to get him in! Of course we're just as charmed by Micke Håkansson and Henrik Danhage's actions, let's not leave them out;)

Most chilling moment of the set was when Tom dedicated "I'm Sorry" to the Swedish minister Anna Lindh, who was murdered a few Evergrey © Nico Wobben days before. Although there weren't all that many people there, the response was incredibly warm (literally as well!), enthusiastic and very loud! Everybody was clapping at a lot of parts and cheering, esp. after each song. Highlights were definitely "Solitude Within", of course the abovementioned "I'm Sorry" and "The Trilogy". After the last song, the neckbreaker "The Masterplan", they left us all happy and satisfied. Everybody had the chance to hang out with the boys for a while and when tourmanager/soundman/roadie/driver/Evergay groupie Arnold Lindberg was breaking down Jonas' drumset I asked him where HIS "Slave" shirt was. Surprisingly he gave me the finger and afterwards asked me where my "Bitch" shirt was, hehehe. Arnold, you rule buddy!!:) (Marlies/Cora)
