DORO (+ GUESTS), SAXON, CIRCLE II CIRCLE
Philipshalle - Düsseldorf (D)
December 13th 2003
It's been 20 years since the girl and guys from Warlock entered the musicbusiness and captured many hearts, not only with their metal, but also through their attractive frontwoman Dorothee Pesch and her powerful voice. I clearly remember their first gig at the Dynamo Club in 1984 and their first album "Burning The Witches" - I was a big fan at the time. After two albums they kind of lost me, the music and the image got too commercial. A few years later Warlock disbanded and Doro started her successful
solo-carreer. I didn't really follow it, because I wasn't really into the music, but I always admired her voice and her charisma when I saw her at festivals. This saturdaynight she celebrated her 20th anniversity in the business and did that with an impressive THREE hour show featuring several guests and two bands supporting.
Due to a lot of delay at the pass booth and the entrance we got in about 45 minutes after we arrived, in the middle of CIRCLE II CIRCLE performing the Savatage-song "Edge Of Time" and then closing with another Sava classic "Taunting Cobras". Zak Stevens brought a complete new line-up, but I didn't recognize anyone. Rumors of half of Savatage joining Zak were apparently false (never knew if they were actually based on more than wishful thinking anyway). So unfortunately I can't say much about the performance itself. It's a shame that hundreds of people, still waiting in line to get in, had to miss all (or most) of it.
Next, none less than the British veterans of SAXON. Biff and his mates brought us a one-hour best-of set, mostly the oldies plus a few more recent songs. This gig is embedded in the band's headlining tour, where a.o. Circle II Circle and Doro are the support acts! Saxon has been around for several years longer than Doro has and they also still know how to bring us metal straight from the heart. Of course the old classics go down the best, metalfans both young and old know them all and everybody is singing along. From their many classics they performed "Heavy Metal Thunder", "Princess Of The Night", "Motorcycle Man", "Crusader", "Wheels Of Steel" and "Denim And Leather" for us and they added newer songs that I didn't know, but enjoyed very much, like "Court Of The Crimson King" and "Are We Travellers In Time".

Around 9.40pm it was time for the German "Lady Of Metal" to enter the stage. DORO was welcomed by an enthusiastic audience, here in her hometown Düsseldorf. I expected a long show, but I didn't dare to expect it to be over three hours!! And without long breaks.. three hours of Doro with her special guests!
The first part of the set was dedicated to Warlock mostly, like her regular opener "I Rule The Ruins" and the classics "Hellbound" and "Burning The Witches". For "East Meets West" Udo Dirkschneider (U.D.O./ex-Accept) joined her on stage. One of her most recent songs, "Always Live To Win" was one of the two Doro-songs of the first part, and a good one to get the audience going nuts!
The second part of the set included some more mellow songs like Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade Of Pale", "Für Immer" and "Tausend Mal Gelebt". The set changed to a starlit night with curtains and candles, very very beautiful!! Some people in the
audience even lit some sparklers :) During "Tausend Mal Gelebt" four violin-players joined the band. For Billy Idol's "White Wedding" another guest joined her, Jean Beauvoir (Plasmatics, Voodoo X, Crown Of Thorns). After the drumsolo Doro did "Bad Blood" with ex-Maiden singer Blaze Bayley, followed by her magnificent version of Dio's "Egypt (And The Chains Are On)" as featured on the Holy Dio Tribute. I just LOVE that song!
She continued with mostly Doro-songs, having Lemmy (what a charisma!) and Mickey Dee of Motörhead join her for "Love Me Forever". For "Burn It Up" she called two muscular football jocks and their cheerleaders of the Düsseldorf football club "Rhein Fire" upon the stage, now that was something else alright :)
But still that was no end to the party yet, Saxon came on stage to perform the Priest song "You've Got Another Thing Coming" with Doro and she did "Alles Ist Gut" supported by keyboards only, very sweet.
After a few moments it was time for Warlock!! They hadn't played together in 16 years, bassist Frank didn't even have a bass anymore, but they played tight (and that after just one rehearsal...), they all had big grins on their faces, were running around like crazy and totally enjoying themselves :) For Nico and me that was a highlight, because we were big Warlock fans in their early days and Nico even
did their fanclub with a couple of friends. The almost-original line-up, Micha Eurich, Frank Rittel, Peter Szigeti - unfortunately not with original guitarist Rudy Graf but with his replacement Niko Arvanitis (very cool for Nico and his friend Haki to be able to catch up with the boys after the show btw!). Together they did "All Night", "Fight For The Rock" and "Evil". After this, Doro did the Steppenwolf-song "Born To Be Wild" with Claus Lessmann of Bonfire (who also gave her flowers) and the whole pack came on stage to do the final song, "All We Are" together!
A big finale to this long long show with lots of music, pyros, guests and a beautiful set/lightshow, hats off for the "Lady Of Metal" Doro Pesch - and congratulations on the anniversary, girl! ;)
