   HOLY MOTHER
Mike Tirelli Mike Tirelli
July 2003

http://www.holy-mother.net

New York’s HOLY MOTHER is going to release a new album on July 21st. "Agoraphobia" is a great power metal album, so I took the opportunity to do an interview with Mike Tirelli.

First of all I’d like to say it’s great to see Holy Mother is releasing a new album. Trying to do a research on the net, there is not much info on the SVP site. I know there is still a site existing, but not easy to find via a search on the net. Luckily I still have your old link under my favourites, but there haven’t been any updates since 2001. What happened to your own website www.holy-mother.com?

I have a new web site. It is http://www.holy-mother.net

How would you describe yourself to our readers not knowing Holy Mother yet?

Holy Mother was more of an American power metal band. In the vein of Dio, Priest. But now on this new CD and new band entitled "Agoraphobia" HOly Mother finally took the leap from just a traditional metal band from New York ..to a band with a generation of metal sounds. From Led Zep, to Black Sabbath, Dio, Priest. And the newer generation of sound, you can hear in the guitars (in which I, Mike Tirelli, played all the rhythm guitars). Also the drums in which pre-production was done by John Macoluso. Then Frank Gilchriest played on the real production of the drums. I tuned the guitars all to lower tunings which gave the sound more depth. The drums were more progressive and powerful, with different timings.

You had quite a few changes in the band, what’s going on these days, do you prefer to work with guest musicians in future?

There were changes like Frank Gilchriest on drums, Tommy Hellbent on lead guitar and now newcomer Mark Van Erp on the bass guitar. And I don't plan to use any guest musicians for the future CDs. This is the best band of any band that I've played in. These guys are great!!!!!!

How did you get in contact with SVP?

Actually I got in contact with SPV through Rainer Hänsel (Cultural Minority). He heard Holy Mother on the radio and got in contact with me.

You all seem to be busy with other projects/bands too, who is doing what lately?

Well, I also sing for Messiah's Kiss. Frank plays with Virgin Steele. But Frank is a permanent member of Holy Mother.

These days with music, it’s not easy to make enough money for living. What about you? Do you all have a regular day job, too?

Most of us do but I don't. I play in Messiah's Kiss and Holy Mother and a DioHoly Mother - Agoraphobia tribute band. That pays well enough.

Can you tell us about "Agoraphobia", is there a concept? Did a song turn out as your favourite? And who did the cover artwork?

"Agoraphobia" means the fear of leaving your home. There was sought of a concept to the CD which dealt with different phobias and fears. You have "Anxiety, Society", "Agoraphobia", "Skitzo", "Nympho". They all deal with mental actions and fears. It's hard to pick a favorite song on this CD. I like each one in different ways! The cover art work was done by Eric Phillipe who did the other CDs for Holy Mother.

How was the making of and which equipment has been used?

I recorded most of the basic tracks in my studio at home and did the drums in Brackel, Germany along with the mixes. I used Jackson guitars, Digi-tech Whamey pedel and Mesa Boogie Amps. The drums were Pearl drums. We mixed on Pro-Tools & Soundscape.

Seeing the Black Sabbath cover "Never Say Die" on "Agoraphobia", how many covers have Holy Mother released so far? By the way "Holy Diver" of the "Holy Dio" tribute is one of my all time fave cover songs.

"Your Song" by Elton John, "Time Of The Season" by The Turtles (I think), "Ya Got Another Thing Coming" by Judas Priest, "Holy Diver" by Dio, "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol and "Never Say Die" by Black Sabbath.

Who’s your biggest influence?

My biggest influences are Dio, Halford, Coverdale and Tate.

Any festivals this summer and a tour plan for "Agoraphobia"? Would have been great seeing you at the Wacken Open Air again, but unfortunately I can’t find your name on the billing...I really enjoyed your last show there /mp/\.jpgm/

Unfortunatly no summer festivals. But soon after the release of "Agoraphobia" on July, 21st we will plan for a tour in September/October.

I often hear that there is a huge difference between touring Europe and America? What’s your experience so far, which band did you enjoy most touring with? Any band you would like to tour with in future?

Well, the landscape is certainly different and the language is different. I love touring whereever we can play for alot of Holy Mother fans. Either Europe or America. I would love to tour with Holy Mother in all of Europe because Holy Mother never toured all of Europe yet!!! Just a couple of countries we played.

These days it seems to be more common for bands to be a studio projects only. What do you think about it? Is it important for a band to tour or is it not really necessary?

I think for metal and rock bands it is important for the people who buy the CDs to see the band live!!!

Over the years you have been in the music biz, you got to know it very well. If you could, would there be anything you like to change these days?

Well, CD sales are down quite a bit. They should invent something to stop people from getting to much free music online.

Instead of giving you the last word, I'd like to give you some keywords and you just tell me what comes to your mind.

- Internet: sex, music

- MP3: copying of CDs

- classic: older

- victory: success, winning, the band

- nympho: a girl I know and a Holy Mother song

- beer: Fun, party and Germany

Thank you very much for taking time to answer this interview. I wish you a great success with "Agoraphobia".

Thank you for the great interview!!!
