   HOW LIKE A WINTER
Mist How Like A Winter Mist
October 2003

http://digilander.libero.it/hlw/

It rarely happens to me that an unknown band can catch me at the first sight and I don't wanna listen to other CDs, just that new one. This August such an extraordinary event happened to me when I listened the debut album "...Beyond My Grey Wake" of an Italian act called How Like A Winter. In this interview I tried to get all band-related infos from guitarist Mist.

The name of your band, "How Like A Winter" is not too known in Hungary yet. Can you say some words about the band and its forming?

Well...How Like A Winter was born some years ago from the cooperation and the unison between Dust and me. We shared an experience in a doom metal project that sadly broke, and after that we decided to walk along a new path. We wrote new material to record a demo cd, and some months before we entered the studio we found new members who joined the band. In July 2001 we recorded "The winter's near" demo cd. The demo got very good feedback from people and press, and we received some proposals from labels too. After some months we signed a record deal with US label Martyr Music Group and in September 2002 the debut "...Beyond My Grey Wake" was recorded. And now...here we are...

Your first album called "Beyond My Grey Wake" totally hits me. I think it brilliantly combines doom, heavy and power metal with gothic and atmospheric stuff. Some parts of the songs are very catchy and have some kind of heavy/power metal feeling, so I can bang my head along to them, while the others are slow, sad and very deep. What is the feedback for the debut album?

Thanx for your kind words...the feedback has been great, reviews are very good. We receive a lot of emails from fans and people who listened to the cd...they share with us the emotions they feel...it's super!

Do you know "My Dying Bride", because sometimes your music reminds me of them. What were your first inspirations? And what are your favourite bands nowadays?

A lot of people ask us about My Dying Bride...sure, they inspired us, I'm not afraid saying that...we grew up listening to their songs. I think, however, that our sound is more personal now, I think we found our own way. I feel our sound really How Like A Winter. My favourite bands? Opeth, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Sopor Aeternus, Dark Tranquillity...

I guess you like Shakespeare...:))) What kind of books do you read? Who are your favourite writers?

Oh yes! Well, as for me I love reading, I read whenever I can, and I read different things...How Like A Winter How Like A WinterI read Poe as well as Tolkien, Neruda as well as Hesse, Bulgakov as well as Jerome K. Jerome...

I love the cover of your album. Who painted it?

The cover was painted by John Kuhr from Novembers Doom. Yes, it's absolutely wonderful...

Have you got plans for the second album? And for the future of the band?

Well, the second album is almost ready...we are talking about it with Maria Abril at Martyr. We would like to add inside some songs taken from the demo as bonus tracks...we will see...

I haven't read on the internet that you have done some live shows. Don't you plan a tour with the new album? I can suggest you a Hungarian concert...:)

We haven't done live shows yet...we have to solve some problems (we are searching for a drummer) in order to go playing live shows around...we want to play live!

What do you know about Hungary? Have you ever been here?

I've been there some years ago...mmm...to be honest I've been just in Budapest (what a beautiful city!) during an Inter-Rail, so I can't say I know Hungary and Hungarian people! I surely will come back to your country...maybe we'll come to play a live show!

I guess in addition to the "well-known" bands like Rhapsody, Elvenking, Mandragora Scream, Novembre, etc., there are many cool bands in Italy, am I right? What do you think about the Italian metal scene? Can you suggest some great new bands for the Hungarian metal fans?

Yes, you're right. The Italian scene offers a lot of very good underground bands, but you know how hard is to emerge...I can surely suggest you some promising Italian bands...I like a lot Klimt 1918 and Room With A View, their debut albums are absolutely great, you must listen to them.

Thanks for the interview. I hope I can see you on stage in the near future....:)

I hope too...thanks for the interview, greetings to Hungary and Hungarian metal fans...listen to "...Beyond My Grey Wake" and feel free to visit our website: http://digilander.libero.it/hlw/ Ciao!
