   CIPHER SYSTEM
Cipher System Henric Carlsson
November 2004

http://www.cipher-system.com

Melodic death metal band CIPHER SYSTEM from Sweden has recently released their debut album, "Central Tunnel Eight". Since I am a fan of this genre, I contacted to band to interrogate them. Their bass player, Henric Carlsson gave the answers to my questions.

Cipher System is not a young band, but "Central Tunnel Eight" is your first album... would you please give a brief history of the band to our readers?

I think that both yes and no is the right answer on this question. Cipher System started out in 2001 from the ashes of Eternal Grief. We started Eternal Grief in 1996 so some of us has played together for some years now. We have released two demos with Cipher System, "Eyecon" and "Promo 2003". The "Promo 2003" recording later became the Split CD with By Night. In May 2004 we entered Studio Fredman for two weeks to record "Central Tunnel Eight" and it was released the 2nd of November 2004.

What is the feedback for the album like?

Far beyond our imaginations so far. We have got great reviews in Legacy, Rock Hard, Metal Hammer to name a few. I have only seen one or two bad and about 50 great reviews. So both us and Lifeforce are really pleased with the reactions so far. What do you think of it?

I liked it very much!
Are all the songs on the album brand new ones or have you used some from your demos?

Central Tunnel Eight The songs on our two demos were so good and not too many people have heard them, so we decided to give them the production that they deserve. So every song from the demos are included on "Central Tunnel Eight".

What are the lyrics about?

They deal with physocological themes, anger, frustration and how sick some people can be. We meet people every day without knowing what they are capable of and the lyrics are tales about the darker side of mankind.

Do you use computers or home studios during the process of making new songs? Who writes the music and who writes the lyrics in your band? How do you make a new Cipher System song?

Yes, Johan who wrote the music for the first album has a low-budget program at his home. But the plans are to invest in a computer so we can record the songs before we enter the studio next time. I wrote all the lyrics on the album and I bring my lyrics as soon as we have a new song ready. Johan makes the riffs at his home and then we jam it together in the reharsalroom.

Will you make videoclip to any of your songs?

We have planed on doing a video for "Central Tunnel Eight". The producer have some plans on it and the members have some plans as well. But it is not decided if we are going to shoot it yet or not, but we have our hopes on it.

Internet might be sometimes helpful musicians. I mean, it gives them the opportunity to touch a larger audience but it is also a threat for them (regarding the copyrights). What is your opinion regarding this medium?

It is a great place because you can reach so many people so easy. But it is also easy for people to download music for free and if to many people do that the whole music industry will collapse. So I think it's great for some things and bad for some reasons.

You worked in the Studio Fredman, where lots of famous Swedish bands (At The Gates, In Flames etc.) recorded their albums. And in your music I can hear this typical Gothenborg death metal influence. What other style of bands influenced your music?

Cipher System I must say progressive metal like Symphony X. When we build a song we try to make it explode at the chorus and for that we have to think about how to build the song. We don't always succed but we try to bring other influences than just metal into our music to make it more unique.

In Studio Fredman was recorded your "Raped By Chaos" demo in 1999. That was mixed by Anders Fridén (In Flames). Were you happy to work with him? How much help did you get from him?

The vocals on that recording are killer and the title track is a great song. But the sound on that demo sound crappy so we were not too happy about it. Anders just did his part, as producer and enginer. But it was a great experiance and it was really fun. The Crown recorded "Deathracer King" at the same time.

What kind of relations have you got with the "famous" Swedish metal bands?

Since we have been in the "underground" scene until now we havn't played together with so many big "famous" bands yet. But I know some of them, we meet them at parties and at the clubs, but we don't hang out with them. I hang out with friends I have had for years and not with people because they are famous.

What type of bassguitar(s), amp head and cabinets do you use?

Right now I use a Dean - Dominator bass, a 4/10 and 15 cabinet. I am going to buy a new amp so I can't really say what I use right now. =)

When shall we expect a new Cipher System album?

I can't really tell you that right now, but we hope as soon as possible. We actually made our first new song for the record yesterday. I hope that we will record our new album in about a year, so you have to wait at least one and a half year.

How many concerts did you play so far? And where...I guess mainly in Sweden?

Yes, only in Sweden. We have made about 50 gigs since the start in -96 with Eternal Grief. But with this line-up, about eight or something.

Cipher System If you had the chance to tour in Europe, what band would you like to go with?

Metallica, SYL, Evergrey, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir or something like that.

Can you make your living from music? Or do you have regular works? What are your "civil" occupations?

Our album is released today so we have to wait for a while until we see any money at all. Right now we don't live on the music, some of us work and some study.

A stupid question but... what is among all the songs you've been listening to in your life the best song?

I think that Samantha Fox "Touch me" is a killer, ha ha ha. NOT

Have you got any fun story with the band?

After a gig our drummer started pissing down our backstage area, then our guitarist went down to the bar and showed everyone his penis and told them how big it was, ha ha. Is that even funny? I don't think so. =)

Do you know any Hungarian bands? Do you know anything about Hungary? :)

Hell, I don't know any bands from Hungary at all. The only thing I know about Hungary is that you have cheep beers and booze. =)

Thanks for the interview. To finish it... do you have anything to add?

No no, thank you. =) Please visit http://www.cipher-system.com for latest news and more info about the band, word up.
