rating: 4/5

1. Metamorphosis
2. Vanguard
3. Screamy Whispers
4. Endless Circle
5. The Dying Of Innocence
6. As Darkness...
7. Saint/Sinner
8. The Fable Of Agnor

This Greek band has been around for more than a decade - off and on. After some line-up changes and a debut album in 2001 ("Power Within"), it's high time for the follow-up: "Nightbreed". Again a great mix of classic and more modern melodic metal and diverse vocals.

After a spoken intro (taken from the movie "Werewolf") the music of "Metamorphosis" starts fast and heavy, in good 80's classics style. Costas Hatzigeorgiou's vocals immediately remind me of Grave Digger, raspy and aggressive, but somewhat "enforced" (if that's the right word for it) - the chorus (and the title) totally remind me of Metalium with its very cool high pitch vocals. In "Vanguard", a bit more epic, he shows us he has a very good clean singing voice as well! I love it when a singer is diverse, it makes the whole CD diverse. Musically it's a timeless metal style with influences of old Iced Earth, Grave Digger, the metal/hardrock classics and 80's metal in general. "Screamin' Whispers" is again faster (cool solo too) but I don't like the vocallines much in this song, a bit too cheesy and even a bit offkey sometimes. No worries, "Endless Circle" has a slower, very Iced Earth-ish riff. Almost a ballad with some acoustic parts.. but then there's a very driven chorus with a killer riff and great, emotional vocals! That ends with some piano-like keyboards that I don't care for, unfortunately. Still, that chorus is my favorite part of the disc. "The Dying Of Innocence" starts again faster and in the Iced Earth vain with the Grave Digger-voice ;) The chorus is more in their own style again (I certainly don't want to portray this band as anyone's copy!) with a blood-chilling scream in the climax *goosebumps*! "As Darkness" is slow and doomy, which is pretty boring to me. And that one very cool scream can't save it, sorry. A lot more tempo again in "Saint/Sinner" - OK song, but nothing too shocking (except for the solo, love that one - almost all solos are played by Elias Koskoris of Dark Nova). "The Fable Of Agnor" tells the story of Agnor The Homeless One in three parts, it's epic and very strong! In part I, "An Orphan Child" the powerful female vocals of Vivi Kitsou (Costas' vocal teacher) take the song to a higher level, very impressive! Reminds me of the first Ayreon album. In part II the song accelerates and we hear Vivi complimenting Costas again in part III. A melodic and epic ending of this CD - one that's very epic and melodic, impressive and diverse!
