The reason for existence of tribute albums will always remain a topic for discussion. Do we need them or is their purpose just to earn money to the recordcompanies who want to take advantages of the fame of bands. I honestly don't know if there is interest for them at all. Why am I in doubt? Because releasing tribute albums became a kind of habit some years ago, destroying its meaning, to really pay tribute to the great bands we "adore". They digged out lousy bands from the closed attic trying to make the classic songs "interesting" and "unusual" but they failed and people got tired of tribute albums and became suspicious on them.
But well, Celtic Frost is a band that is worth mentioning and remembering all the time. Black Lotus Records gave a try to restore the meaning of tribute albums and they succeeded. "Order Of The Tyrants" is surely not the first and last Celtic Frost tribute album that has been ever made, but actually it is a very good one. They gathered mostly known and respected bands from the death and black metal scene of nowadays.

The fourteen covers had been chosen from the first three Celtic Frost albums, "Morbid Tales" - 1984, "To Mega Therion" - 1985, "Into The Pandemonium" - 1987, from the ones they wrote metal history with. There are only two exceptions. The first track, "Visual Aggression" covered by Grief Of Emerald, was originally released on the "Emperor's Return" EP, and Necrophagia's version for "Triumph Of Death", that is in fact a Hellhammer song (for those who would not know, Celtic Frost arose from the ashes of Hellhammer in 1984).
Except one song, all the bands made a good job with the Celtic Frost songs. They kept the songs' originality but also gave their own marks to them. Just like the above mentioned pick by Necrophagia, that turned out to be a sick version of the original, or the truly unusal cover of "Rex Irae" presented by Order Of The Ebony Hand, or even the Black Sabbath-ish "Return To Eve" by Naer Mataron is really enjoyable. The only song I don't know why it had been put on this album is the electronized "Beyond The Northwind" by Carrier Flux. That's the only lousy point of this tribute album.

The layout is nice and in the booklet the discography of the featured bands are availabe. It's a nice release for Celtic Frost fans, at some points even interesting. Recommended but not a must.
