Universe is a band from Germany that already existed since 1985 under the name Axe Victims. In this time the band had two records and some success. "Is There Something?" was already written and recorded two years ago. But after the production vocalist Frank DiSanto died of cancer and the band took some time off. Understandable! Now the band dares a new start with a new singer and under a new flag: Universe.

I'm not familiar with the previous work of this band, but after listening to this album I was really surprised. It was totally not what you would have expected from their futuristic cover. This is a well sounding hard rock album which doesn't invent anything new, but neither is boring. Universe does not try to fit in the today's market and catapult us back in times of Accept and Saxon. But Universe manages to let it sound fresh and let at least one foot tap along. Most of the songs are mid-tempo and tracks like "Children Of The Night" and "748" have additional nicely done choirs in the back.

Co-producer and mixing man was Charlie Bauernfeind, who should be known by any fan of Blind Guardian, Saxon and Helloween. So it is not a big surprise that the guitars sometimes remind of Saxon. With 43 minutes the album is not really long, but you can be sure Universe did not fill up time with third-rate sounds.

So if you like angry hard rock, Universe might be something for you!
