Debut album from a Finnish band playing melodic power metal. Twilightning's outcome isn't that original, but more importantly it is happy, uplifting, melodic and damn catchy. The choruses are catchy, damn catchy, so catchy that you're instantly hooked. Their power metal is somewhat similar to Sonata Arctica, but their outcome also has some influences from 80's heavy metal and hard rock and Europe is a name that pops into mind without any struggle. The guitar duet Ville Wallenius and Tommi Sartanen are responsible for the outstanding tracks and Heikki Pöyhiä's great voice, which occasionally reminds me of Michael Kiske, gives the songs the final touch. The guys are young, which makes it all the more noteworthy. Productionwise the album is of the guaranteed Spinefarm quality. Such names as Anssi Kippo, Timo Tolkki and Astia and Finnvox studios are known for high quality products.

"Gone To The Wall" is one hell of an opener and the next one, the Europe-esque "At The Forge" is the one that wipes all the doubts away. If you're into mellow melodic heavy metal, this is a song that has everything. The only thing that bothers in it, is its somewhat pointless guitar solo, but wottehell...I'm singing along, no matter how pointless the guitar solo is. "Jester Realm" is again power metal that on the other hand offers very little "new", but still is so (watch out, a word I haven't used yet is coming) catchy that that you're humming along before you've even heard the song. The title track starts with an intro played by flute-like keyboards. Soon it turns into a power metal fireworks and all I can say is: here we go again! Simply amazing! And so is "Return To Innocence". I'm starting to think that maybe these guys have invented some secret potion that gives them the ability to come up with such amazing melodies. Unfortunately the rest of the album isn't that great, although it's still very enjoyable. "Under Somber Skies" is a semi-ballad/midtempo song that is quite nice but sadly nothing more. "Seventh Dawn" comes close to the the first five songs in ....cathiness. "Enslaved To The Mind" and "Masked Ball Dalliance" are closer to mediocrity, but that doesn't change the fact that this album is an amazing display of what Twilightning are capable of.

For a debut album this album is so good, that if these guys intend to improve for the next album - and quite obviously they do - it is going to be so great that it doesn't make any sense! If you want sing-along choruses and a smile on your face, try Twilightning. I did. Someone come and wipe this damn smile off my face.
