Early 2000 saw the release of Throne Of Chaos' debut album "Menace And Prayer", and as promising as it was, it had a strong Children of Bodom-stamp on it. With their 2002 follow-up they sure have taken a step away from the traces of Bodom, but where exactly, is a bit hazy at this point. The material on the album is very two-sided, as on the other hand there are some extremely catchy, melodic and beautiful passages and on the other hand there are some really raw and aggressive parts. One might really wonder if the band even themselves know what they want.

The band represents three different singers on the album. One being the band main man Taneli Kiljunen and guest appearances from Pasi Nykänen and Niklas Isfeldt who now sings in the Swedish power metal act Dream Evil. I've never liked growling vocals that much but Nykänen's singing is simply unbearable for my ears. He sounds like he has fire under his ass and is screaming for help. Kiljunen's growling sounds much more acceptable and at this point it's quite obvious that my favorite of the three is easily Niklas Isfeldt.

The album starts with "Johnny B. Dead" and the band showing their more aggressive side and the beating only seizes for a mellow melodic part in the middle. The second one, "Pervertigo", is quite a CoB reminiscent and combines both clean and growling vocals. The chorus is so damn catchy, that I can easily imagine some faces going green of envy in the power metal camp. Simply an amazing display of having an ear for melody. The third one, "The System", is again a rawer and faster one and "No Nothing" leaves you speechless once again. An amazing melody that leaves you collecting your jaw from the floor once you've dropped it. Yes, you will drop it. This kind of alternation goes on throughout the album. All in all, the album is a mix of Children of Bodom influences, amazingly beautiful melodies and a more aggressive, straight forward approach.
