Swan Christy used to be a symphonic metal band. That was all the information I had got when their newest work, "Julian" landed in my mailbox. I haven't heard their previous albums so I can't compare "Julian" to them but one thing is for sure, it has nothing to do with metal at all. And it has nothing to do with symphonic music either. I would rather call "Julian" some kind of alternative musical experimenting.

Actually the label says it is a "Soundtrack of a schizophrenic movie" and with this short description they said everything about this album. Listening to "Julian" feels like opening a door to a schizophrenic dream and falling into its spiraling madness. The soft, caressing melodies are placed next too confused, weird, eerie compositions. There is a thin line between reality and the world our mind may create and this album tries to give a picture about it. It is never easy task because what is real and what is fiction is very biased, we all have different interpretations for it. I hope these few thoughts above helped to give you a hint about the album.

But let's talk about the musical aspects of "Julian". Forget about drums or guitars and prepare for keyboards, and lots of electronics. This music is influenced by synth-pop, drum 'n' bass, jazz and Pink Floyd and everything else you can imagine in between. Sometimes it feels like it is just a senseless mass of noise while some melancholic parts are taking your soul away.

Sometimes that thin line is fading and sometimes it is very obvious. As the album continues this line slips out of our hands and we are sinking deeper in this experimental world. It's useless to put any label on this music because what was right for one song is completely incorrect for the other one. For example it is impossible to compare songs like the melancholic "But... That Was Before" to the distorted "Pure Inspiration".

If you like abstract music, give "Julian" a try.

["Deep in your eyes, I see the same small future I saw in me once
Deep in your smile, I feel an old man's smile like that smile that died with me
Behaving like insane but there is no need to, you can't escape time" ...]
