I don't exactly understand the outcry of the fans against Subway To Sally before the release of this record. Nevertheless I find the opener "Geist Des Kriegers" to be undiplomatically chosen since it carries distorted vocals and the verses sound a bit too rammsteinish to not scare fans away that already are plagued by doubts. But since the band released "Hochzeit" back in 1999 it should be clear to everybody that STS are not afraid of changes. And in my opinion "Engelskrieger" does not represent such a great break with previous releases as "Hochzeit" did at its time.

With "Engelskrieger" STS somehow continue the modern sound of "Hochzeit". Redundant elements have been left out and only the essence of STS found its way on the album. One can hear without doubt it's still the same band that's playing there since the basic arrangements are clearly STS and also trademarks such as the multivocal chanting are still playing an important role. But one might pity the fact that a lot of elements that used to be attached to the STS sound have been thrown overboard, especially when considering how well the band knew how to create a perfect symbiosis of myriads of details and unusal instrumentation. With a few exceptions lutes and bag pipes have disappeared and also the violin isn't a too important component anymore. Like already on the last two releases of the Potsdam based band electronics are being increasingly used.

At this point one should not forget about the lyrical side which has always been equally important as the music itself. That might partly explain the changes in STS's sound: it seems as if the music has been matched with a new style of lyrics. Those became more straight -without leaving room for one's own interpretations- and they became more modern as well. Not medieval lyric but a modern diction with reference to current themes are the feature of this album. So for example the band does have a critical look on war, child abuse, AIDS or medicide.

The whole record is extremlely easy to get into, does have a great groove and is produced top-notch. Mostly heavy and with modern riffing there are of course also acoustic interludes and especially the song "Verloren" could have been on "Herzblut" as well (sounds like a follow-up to "Herrin Des Feuers" to me)

One might miss the folky elements but one cannot deny that STS are still able to create infectious music (though I'm usually not a fan of a guitar sound like that). And during one of their upcoming gigs these new songs will be partied along to like to all the older hits as well.
