Oh my dog! Having found the previous album "interesting", I was sort of looking forward to the new Solefald. I had never expected to be blown away like this though! So the next step was my wish to review this album to tell the world what a fine record it is. But how would I go about reviewing the weirdness that is the Solefald sound? I thought of not reviewing it in a second step. But that would be an extremely stupid thing to do and since "In Harmonia Universali" deserves the exposure, here's my attempt of a review.

As you can already tell from my rather uninspiring introduction I haven't really a clue of how to do this review. I also have to point out that words will fail to discribe what can be heard on the album. There's no way to label this Norwegian duo's music though it's certainly metal. It's also progressive music in the deepest sense of the word and it laughs in the face of a lot of bands that call their work progressive, ha! Anyway, once you've listened to the album and it appealed to you, you will for sure find yourself hitting the repeat button.

"In Harmonia Universali" is a unique blend of pretty much everything in metal, rock and classical music. Blastbeat parts are interrupted by soft piano passages, real angry and aggressive vocals are followed by some clean choirs or vice versa. Speaking of choirs: a highlight in regards of choirs can be found on track 3, "Christiania", which features a male choir.
Generally, each track has growl/grim vocal parts courtesy of Cornelius and the unmistakeable clean vocals of Lazare, both of which often come combined in dramatic choirs also. While the conventional instrumentation (guitars, bass, drums) give the album its heavy crunch, especially the use of organic instruments like saxophone, hammond organ or piano add a certain something to the arrangements.
There's so much happening in just a single song and it simply isn't possible to name any other band as reference. Music is to be heard and not to be written about after all (huh, am I loosing my job here now?;)) What did they say themselves once......red music with black edges, right. It either makes me want to sing in a choir or pick up my keyboard again (which I haven't touched in over ten years) but I have no time to do it - I have to hit the repeat button all the time ;)
And as if the rousing music wasn't enough also the thoughtful lyrics should be mentioned that are written/sung in four (!) different languages: English, Norwegian, German and French. Details like the way how it is discribed who did what on the album give the whole package a nice finish.

If you're looking for something adventurous and extravagant, this album is a great choice!
