Sethian is a rather new Finnish band and "Into The Silence" is their debut album. The songs are mostly mid-tempo melodic hard rock/heavy metal and sadly there isn't that much variation in them. It feels like they took a rulebook and followed it too strictly. Even if there are some nice hooks and catchy melodies, one can't put aside the fact that the songs are structuarlly repetitive and it makes the album quite difficult to swallow. If only they had coloured the album with a little more variation and it would have been a lot more enjoyable.

The music is melodic, catchy and accessible. It could be described as mellow melodic heavy metal with some influences from the 80's and some melancholic moods as well. The production is somewhat polished which, depending on one's taste, might suit quite well, but I would have liked to hear just a little rougher sound. There are a few songs that stand out from the rest of the material, them being "Dream Domain" and "Heavens May Fall", the rest of them being unfortunately more or less indifferent. The frontman Wilska is now known for his duties in Finntroll and also doing some additional vocals for Nightwish. His voice is quite nice but at the same time also unfortunately a little indifferent. Tuomas Holpainen (Nightwish) handles the keyboards as a guest musician and also Jukka Nevalainen (Nightwish) is present in the lineup.

Despite the not-so-flattering outcome, I still am quite interested to see (and hear) to which direction they'll develop on their future releases.
