Is this the new Soilwork? Another look on the cover tells me I'm listening to Scar Symmetry. Scar who? After reading through the bio I know a little bit more: Scar Symmetry is something like an all-star band. Most of the members are well-known from a couple of other Swedish bands: Jonas Kjellgren (g, Carnal Forge, Centinex, World Below), Henrik Ohlsson (d, Theory In Practice, Mutant, Altered Aeon), Per Nilsson (g, Altered Aeon), Christian Älvestam (v, Unmoored, Incapacity, Torchbearer) and Kenneth Seil (b). So, the musicians involved are all somewhat experienced which explains why they were capable of such an album despite having formed just a year ago.

Still, Scar Symmetry don't really sound like any of the members' other bands but like later Soilwork (I mentioned it already). What's more, with "Symmetric In Design" they easily surpass Soilwork's last output "Figure Number Five". We're definitely talking quality music here but on the other hand I must say that I have a little problem with a band that sounds like (or even better than, hehe) the "original".

Vocalist Christian Älvestam is very diverse, that's for sure. He can growl, scream, shout.....and sing. This guy's great! His (clean) vocals in combination with the massive melodies make each track catchy as hell. The guitars on the other hand still provide enough heaviness and aggression, there's a bunch of nice solos too and yes, there's keys/synths which for the main part aren't all too prominent though - at least not in a way that I found them annoying.
All of the songs are more or less on the same quality level, I wouldn't say that a particular track falls flat compared to another one.

If you're a fan of melodic death metal and/or Soilwork and aren't bothered by the blatant similarity check out "Symmetric In Design" and take it for what it is: a good album.
