Finally, the latest album of long-time Florida death metallers, Monstrosity has arrived in Europe. "Rise To Power" originally was released on their drummer Lee Harrison's label, Conquest Music, in the States last October. And it will hit the European stores in the next couple of days. My first advice is: if you want to know what death metal is all about, go for Monstrosity.

Sticking to their roots, their latest effort is still powerful, brutal, into-your-face death metal. Classic death metal with fresh waves and modernism. Aggressive and confident music, so called non-compromising. Their secret to keep our attention is the well-paced rhythm and ideas for changes. The songs don't get broken but you never know what comes next while the music stays solid and homogeneous. Lee's tight, strict drumming is the base of their music. The fascinating, many times technical guitar work and solos are the hightlights of the album, and it is all completed with the understandable growling vocals by Jason Avery.
The 50-minute long album consist of old-school Florida death metal spiced up with the energetic thrash metal riffs and groovy but heavy melodies, expanding the dynamism of this always-widening metal genre. The songs are rolling over you and recharge you with energy.
For example, take the first track already. The great riffs and the pounding drums would just march through you but around the middle of the song there is this nice solo and you feel like you slipped into a completely different world for a few seconds. And in the background, during almost the whole song, you can hear a riff leading you through the song and it makes it really furious. Then comes "Awaiting Armageddon" that starts with blastbeats supported by the bass till a guitar solo takes the lead over and soon, death metal hell is unleashed. One of my favourites is "Wave Of Annihilation". It's slower and and it has got killer riffs and this combination makes you feel it so heavy, like you were going under the water with stones tight to your feet. The short bass-solo deepening this feeling till Jason's hollow, unarticulated growls set in.

My only problem with the album is its sound. Based on what Lee said, I hope it's only with the promo copies, but despite of being clear and bright, the drum sound is a bit thin. Otherwise "Rise To Power" is highly recommended.
