For the first time I heard of Mercenary back when they released "Everblack" and I remember there's been quite a lot of talk going on when "11 Dreams" came out but it wasn't until I saw them as support for Evergrey recently that I actually really got to hear them. Well, you could say that they got me interested at least and so I went to get the album. Ever since I'm playing "11 Dreams" a lot.

It's hard to categorize Mercenary's music. Those Danes combine power, death, prog and thrash metal into one thing that I for lack of words simply call METAL. Not one song sounds like the other. Classic heavy metal bits meet modern thrashy grooves and clear, sometimes rather high vocals meet harsh ones or growls and so on. It's not exactly what I would call a weird mix though. But it's a mix that should make a large amount of metalheads very happy, whether you're more into Soilwork, Nevermore, Brainstorm, Evergrey or Dark Tranquillity. The album isn't a compromise but the perfect balance between aggression and melody. What a wall of guitars! Add keys for density. And did I mention there's tons of great hooks on there? "Firesoul", "Sharpen The Edges", "Surpremacy v2.0" - you name it. Or just listen to the title track "11 Dreams" which perhaps doesn't represent the album as a whole that well (less aggression) but cannot be much better anyway. Whether you want to view track number 10 "Times Without Changes" as a ballad (based on piano) or a lengthy intro to the awesome final track "Loneliness" is up to you.

Only the cover version of Kent's "Music Non Stop" doesn't seem to fit well. I haven't a clue why they put it in between their own compositions and I actually thought I dislike it....until I found myself humming the song at work ;D. I could still do without it though.

Anyway, I was late getting this album but I'm just lucky that I got it at all. With the long list of praise Mercenary already got for "11 Dreams" elsewhere it's pointless to write more. Check them out!!
