Almost 10 years after it's original release, Mennen's self-titled debut album is still a pleasure to listen to. The sound is not the most modern of course, but the songs are timeless. Heavy rock with hearty guitarwork and a lot of groove, colored in with ex-Zinatra singer Joss Mennen's distinctive voice and vocallines.

"Hot Summer Nights" still invites to sing along and "Killerdog" to headbang, still a hit live! "Outsiders Of The Storm" starts acoustic and reminds me of Led Zeppelin. The rest of this pounding metalsong takes off with a powerful scream, Joss' voice is really good, clear but with lots of power and soul. "Movin' On" goes more in the rock 'n roll or bikerrock direction and "World Affair" stands out a.o. because of the great lengthy guitar solo at the end. Another song that stands out is one of my favorite songs in Dutch pop history, the classic "House For Sale", originally performed by Lucifer (with the singer Margriet Eshuijs). A song that they still love to do live! And they do it well, although Joss' voice is not as dark as Margriet's. The rest of the songs are good rocking entertainment but a bit average. This re-release contains 4 bonus tracks, one Japanese bonus ("Lost" - slow and not so special IMHO), and 3 demo songs. You can probably imagine what "The One Ring" is about... yup, it even starts with a narrated intro about "the one ring to rule them all" etc. The CD closes with demo versions of "World Affair" and "House For Sale".

An overall fine album, not yet of a constant high quality, but a typical decent debut album - still fairly straight-forward and unpolished - very enjoyable!
