After The EP "Back For My Life", Masterplan are back with their second longplayer "Aeronautics". The style is of course no secret at all, after the well-known titletrack of the EP (see my review in the archives) and the opener (being also on the EP). Eight further tracks can be found on the album (just like on the debut, almost exactly two years ago).

The very heavy-sounding "Crimson Rider" is dominated by vocalist Jorn Lande who is doing a great job throughout all the songs. The easy-sounding but also catchy "Back For My Life" should be familiar to all of you by now. "Wounds" is a brandnew song, a hymn that reminds me of the opener from the debut ("Spirit Never Die"). The guys haven't forgotten how to write a song, the typical songwriting is obvious. On "I'm Not Afraid" Jorn shows the wide range of his voice. The "Headbanger's Ballroom" is groovy all the way, but the lyrics seem a bit sad, shown through the voice and through the bridge too. Important to be mentioned are the breaks by the rhythm section, especially by drummer Uli Kusch. "After This War" is a power-ballad, that reminds me of the song "After The War" by Iron Savior from their 2000 album "Dark Assault"; not only because of the title, but also the vocal lines within the chorus are quite similar. Well, no problem at all because bass-player Jan-S. Eckert wrote the song when he was in Iron Savior but...a bit strange I think. "Into The Arena" is another typical Masterplan song, that unfortunately can't keep the level of my fave song till now (opener "Crimson Rider"), and the chorus sounds a bit unspectacular, but Lande's vocals remain great. "Dark From The Dying" is nothing special, no climax within that song, but "Falling Sparrow" is better because it is faster. Especially the guitar playing by Roland Grapow and the drums, being played stakkato-like. The songwriting highlight on "Aeronautics" is the 8 minutes-song "Black In Burn". And the song convinces the listener from the first to the last second. Starting like a rock opera, it continues like the typical Masterplan song fast and headbangable ;-) At the end, the speed is a bit slowed down but on time at the end, the speed is back again. Well, it is not as catchy as some other ones, but that's not what I expect from a song of almost 9 minutes length. Melodies are there (as usual) and sometimes even progressive elements can be heard.

After all, "Aeronautics" cannot hold the high standards of the debut album but reaching that level was almost impossible! Masterplan have done another great record, and that must be recognized by you all! ;-)
