"Cyclic" is the second album released by Norwegian band Lunaris. Their debut "...The Infinite" certainly was a good album but didn't really meet my taste so much. I liked the progressive elements and technicality but in the end it was too much black metal for me. The first song I heard off "Cyclic" some time ago was "Existence Unveiled" and to me the song was pretty much in the vein of the "...The Infinite" material (slightly less technical perhaps). But mainman M promised that particular song wouldn't do justice to the album as a whole and so I was very curious to hear the final result. Now that I have heard "Cyclic" I can only underline his statement.

"Cyclic" is much more versatile than its predecessor. It's also less black and more prog and death, whether you like that or not. I know I do. Already the second song "I.A.D." (feat. a guest appearance by the mighty Steve DiGiorgio on bass) really took me by surprise. At times it sounds a lot like pure prog metal and I was actually reminded of (older) Fates Warning (! - no kidding). I don't really like the clean vocals on this song too much though, I find them more appealing on "Casualities Of Peace" (great song!) or "In Nothing". Can't explain it.

No need to fear Lunaris mellowed out though. Yes, the overall outcome is more melodic than on "...The Infinite" and Lunaris have added some calm moments to their sound, just like some acoustic guitars here and there or simply some mid-paced passages. But you can be sure each song will always turn into an evil and aggressive beast at some point, hehe. Another good example for the "calmer" category would be "Altruismens Gravøl" which is quite slow and laid back in the first third of the song.

There's still plenty of black metal elements in each song and the guys did not forget how atmospheric black metal from Norway should sound like. The third track (and one of my favourites too), "Lessons In Futility", shows an affinity to Emperor. The atmosphere and the keys/piano on that song are outstanding.
On "Slaves Of Opinion" I was sometimes reminded of Cynic amd mainly thanks to the keys/hammond but also the somewhat traditional sounding guitar for the solo, "When It Ends" could be classified as black prog if that label existed ;-) Not only unusal sounding for Lunaris but also for the whole genre they represent. And I like the bass on that one.
Once the last track "Mot Matt" (a very short tune, running time 2:20 min) is over you will find there's a hidden outro (I wonder what the point of this is).

I can wholeheartedly recommend this to friends of progressive, atmospheric and melodic black/death metal.
