Once again mr Luca Turilli is flooding with symphonic power metal. What is this, the tenth Rhapsody/Turilli release within just a few years? At least that's what it feels like. But why should I complain? I have liked his/their earlier stuff quite a bit, so there really isn't any reason to.

This time Turilli has added the title "cosmic" to describe his music more in detail and while listening to the keyboards, they do really sound "cosmic" and excluding the storyline and the lyrics, that quite sums up the cosmical side. Musically, if you're familliar with his earlier stuff, you pretty much know what to expect: choirs, massive orchestral arrangements and choruses that stick. Quite oddly one gets the impression that on the other hand we've heard this already and on the other hand that this is quite a refreshing approach. I think it's a combination of them both, but I personally am already so confused that I don't know what to think anymore. And even if you would get a "déjà-vu" feeling, this still quite easily exceeds most of the stuff that is called power metal. My conflict with my own thoughts comes in with the tracks "The Age of Mystic Ice" and "Zaephyr Skies' Theme" for example. While the earlier is somewhat foreseeable, the latter sounds like it's taken off of a space movie soundtrack. Absolutely amazing and beautiful. The atmosphere ranges from dark and oppressive to happy and light, so I think "monotonous" is definitely a word we can all forget.

The history of Turilli/Rhapsody isn't that long (yet), but if he keeps on releasing material at this pace, he might want to check it (the pace) at times to avoid turning into a man who just keeps on repeating himself. But as long as the quality of the compositions is as high as it is now, there isn't really anything to worry about. Actually there's only one negative note to make on the whole album: "New Century's Tarantella". It includes extremely "inviting"-sounding beginning with the flute sound, but for me the accordion and the occasional polkaish rhythms ruin it all. But that's just me. The title track is a massive epic that lasts almost 12 minutes, but I don't quite know what to think of it: either it's so mediocre that it just drives by (which I refuse to believe) or it in all its complexity includes so much stuff to be heard that I can but stand and wonder in amazement.

Is it possible to ever get bored with excellence? I wouldn't know. All I know that this is a must buy for friends of symphonic power metal.
