Lost Horizon took the power metal world by storm with their debut album a few years ago. Now they're back with their new album entitled "A Flame To The Ground Beneath". The style hasn't changed, that's for sure. And why should it? Why fix something that isn't broken? Lost Horizon have added a few members to their line-up and so now the band features six members with funny stage names. But unessential points now aside. The music itself is as close to being perfect power metal as possible. All the elements needed are present: powerful and heavy riffs, catchy melodies, sing-along choruses, variation between fast and slower parts, atmospheric, wind-like keyboards, Daniel Heiman's amazing vocal performance, Wojtek Lisicki's inconceivably amazing songwriting, a crystal clear production, simply put everything.

Sure the stage names of the members and some song titles may sound like clichés, but at least I don't care about that at all. No way since the musical bliss offered on this release is beyond heavenly. The whole album is somewhat easy to listen to since the music grabs you right away with all the power and melodies but still manages to include some hooks one may not notice on the first listen, which is one reason why this albums lasts for numerous listens. The overall atmosphere, regardless of the speed, ranges from really furious to relaxing and calm and in all it's ostensible simplicity the album is actually quite a diverse one.

The album starts with a keyboard driven atmospheric intro which soon shifts into "Pure" that right away reminds of what Lost Horizon is all about. Thundering riffs and drumming, twirling solos and simply amazing vocals. "Lost In The Depths Of Me" is a very epic and majestic that lasts for almost nine minutes and is all just pure pleasure. Next up is "Again Will The Fire Burn" which is a somewhat typical power metal anthem and is followed by a short keyboard interlude named "The Song Of Earth". "Cry Of A Restless Soul" is a thundering tune with double bass fury (aren't they all?) and is again an eight minute epic. "Think Not Forever" is one more chapter to the book "How to sound catchy and memorable" that simply forces you to at least hum along. The last real song on the album is "Highlander (The One)" which really puts the limits of "epic" and "pompous" to a test with its 12 minutes of ear candy. The last track is a three-minute "Deliverance" of space and mist created by keyboards.

Once again Lost Horizon manages to kick the crap out of others trying to sound melodic, powerful and fast and with this album they set new standards for power metal. From now on other power metal albums will be compared to this definite masterpiece.
