Italy's Last Rites advertises their first disc, "Mind Prison", as a "thrash-death metal assault." Quite honestly, I couldn't have said it better myself. From the first proper track, "Against War" onward, Last Rites unrelentingly pummels the listener with dizzying guitar work, cannon sized drums, and earth shattering bass. If ever there were a sense of deja vu to accompany an album, Mind Prison would be it. Remember when thrash and death first merged and it just made you want to bang your head and/or play air guitar??? Well, this album and this band will make you feel that way again. Track four, "Psycho Killer", is an absolute shred-fest, staccato beats abounding and the main riff is somewhat reminiscent of Children of Bodom, and there is no wrong in that at all. Actually, I don't see anything really wrong with this album, aside from the minor gripe that the sound is dated, but like Scavenger, the sound is dated in the best possible way. Vocalist Dave (no last name) who also handles guitar duties, has a singing voice that is an uncanny resemblance to the late Chuck Shuldiner. With that in mind, I dedicate this review to Chuck and his memory, and give the album full points if only because hearing Last Rites makes me think of Death, and of Chuck, and of how much we all miss him. Hails!!!
