Kirwes are a young 3-piece band from Finland playing melodic metal with a twist. It would be easiest to label them as rather traditional heavy metal, but that wouldn't be fair since they have a strange (in a positive way) touch to their music, especially with the dark lyrical theme and the melancholy synth melodies. The band features both male and female vocalists which certainly enriches their output, as especially the voice of the female singer is gentle and vivid and has a certain kind of innocence to it. And if the album and song titles weren't hints enough, they sing in Finnish. This CD is indeed self-financed and occasionally it shows as the production is not from the most massive end of the line. But trivialities aside, the music itself varies from fast crunchy heavy metal to slower and gloomier tunes. The CD starts off with an intro called "Avaus" that features haunting sounds from a war zone. The first actual song "Voittaja" is a rather typical up-tempo heavy metal tune with excellent lyrical contribution. "Kylmän Kukkia" is a melancholy cover version of an old Finnish hit song. "Oikeus" starts off with a 2-minute melancholy synth intro and the song itself is a slow one with longing and nostalgia written all over it. "Kohtuus" features a memorable main melody and rather customary guitar work. "Onnen Etsijä" is again a fast one that possesses a kind of a folkish melodies. "Seitsemäs" is again from the more mellow side of the band. It is both heavy and relieving at the same time. "Voima" is a mid-tempo that unfortunately remains rather insignificant. All in all Kirwes certainly have some fine tunes with some memorable melodies, not in a power metal candy-catchy way, but with melancholy written all over it. Luckily.
