The knights from Florida are here again and they have sharpened their swords once again. What does one expect from a band that has come very close to perfection with their previous album? You guessed right. Perfection. "Epica" is, if possible, even more symphonic and majesitc than it's predecessor. The album contains 17 tracks (bonus song "Snow" included) of which 12 are "real" songs while the rest are some sort of interludes.

The album starts with a prologue and when the first notes of "Center Of The Universe" hit, you know Kamelot has taken you to melody heaven once again. I had no idea that it is even possible for something so wonderful to exist. They really re-define the meaning for the expression "incredible melody". After such an amazing opener we have "Farewell" which is a little heavier one. Next up is a bit slower "The Edge of Paradise" that once again sticks to your mind with it's longing atmosphere and melody and so does the first ballad "Wander". "Descent Of The Archangel" is once again a strong display of Kamelot's songwriting skills as it shadows most other competitors even if it's not nearly the best work on the album and pretty much the same goes for "A Feast For The Vain", once again a truly amazing lead melody. "On The Coldest Winter Night" is the second ballad of the album and it fills its spot just as well as "Wander" does. The beginning of "Lost & Damned" sounds somewhat haunting and soon turns into a power metal anthem and then turns into a tango atmosphere with accordion stepping into the picture. These parts alternate and while the chorus is a mediocre one on the Kamelot-scale, the song in general is still very strong. "Helena's Theme" is an orchestral arrangement with female vocals and a dramatic atmosphere. "The Mourning After" is again a slow and memorable one. "III Ways To Epica" is the sequel to Kamelot's "how-to-sound-perfect" which they started on "Center Of The Universe". "Snow" being a bonus track must also say something about the level of musicianship and songwriting.

The production and mixing duties were handled by Sascha Paeth and Miro and frankly I don't think it's possible for the sound to be any better. The album contains so much stuff that it takes more than just one listen to get fully into or at least for me it did. But once you're in, there's no getting out.
