Insomnium are once again a great example of the endless source of great Finnish bands. Their style is easiest to compare to such names as Tales-era Amorphis, Amok-era Sentenced and older In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. So does it make the music melodic death metal? I dare not say as my expertise doesn't quite reach that far, but it certainly is something along those lines added with a slender folkish touch. And occasional, more straight forward rocking parts can also be heard at times. Anyway, we're definitely not talking about happy-happy joy-joy music here.

The going gets heavy, and I mean heavy!, but is also mellowed down at times by beautiful acoustic guitar parts. Niilo Sevänen's (vocals, bass) singing reminds me quite a bit of the Sentenced-era Taneli Jarva. Not the most horrid growler, but clearly far away from the level where the vocals are called clean, except the occasional whispers. The production is good enough, but also rough enough. I think it would sound a bit silly, for this kind of music, if the sound was extremely polished and clear.

Once upon a time there was a huge, dark forest and a tiny little clearing in the middle of it. On the clearing, there's a small, helpless listener. Lost, cold and alone. For a little while the poor listener wonders what to do. Should he go and try to get out of the forest or just stay there and be forgotten? The autumn is slowly turning into winter and the sky is darkening so the little listener decides to look for some shelter. But as he walks among the tall trees and their shadows, he is caught by a devilish storm that whips his face and makes a normal rainy day feel like a walk in sunshine. The listener kneels down by a cliff looking for cover from the whipping rain, when all of a sudden the sun shines warmly and makes all the clouds disappear. For a short while a smile appears on the listener's face, but shortly turns into a gloomy grin again as the darkness falls on the forest again. The nearby lake is starting to freeze and the nature's got a nice but cold snow-frosting. Suddenly a warm breath of wind bloes again and eases the pain for a short while, but you're already preparing yourself for the storm ahead...and you still have no idea how to get out of the forest.

When it's 2021 (or whatever) and your kids want to hear a spooky tale...don't tell that silly story of mine, they're just words that came to my mind while listening to Insomnium. Instead, just put "In the Halls Of Awaiting" in the player and let the darkness fall.
