In Pain Die
rating: 3.5/5

1. Liquid And Bone
2. Why I'm Here
3. Plaything
In Pain Die are a fairly young band from North Wales and all their hard work is slowly paying off. I believe this is their 6th demo since 2000 and over the years they've grown into a angry and heavy thrash/metalcore-with-a-hint-of-nu type of band with a lot of familiar sounding ingredients (like some good Machine Head type of stuff) as well as some diverse and cool ideas of their own. The sound is a lot better than older recordings as well, yet there is still a lot to be desired for. But hey, it's a demo. The riffs are heavy, I love the rhythm section and the groove, but with Matty's vocals I seem to have a sort of love/hate relationship. Sometimes he just kicks ass and at other spots he's just not strong or on key enough. But in generally it's a pretty in-your-face type of band!

This 3 track CD came out in 2003 already and as I'm writing (end of October 2004) they are recording a follow up! But for now, this self-titled demo will have to do. "Liquid And Bone" is currently probably the most popular song live with it's good chorus and killer growling backing vocals (I believe that's bassist Ant) - check out the vids on their website! "Why I'm Here" has some killer riffing and again the deep growls, but the clean vocals in it and most of the middle part take a lot of energy out of it. Towards the end the killer riffing and vocals return, luckily;) Last song is "Plaything" with a lot of Jon's cool drumming. Most of the vocals are great too, but damn, part of the verses (where Matty tries to sing higher) are really not good enough. The chorus is more angry and MH-like again:) The song ends with a little unusual but cool sounding guitar bit. Check the (full) songs and several videos out at http://www.inpaindie.net!

All in all I'm sticking to just above the middle note (3) and anticipating the new material!
