At some places time seems to fly. One of them is Skölden in Sweden where the band Incapacity is from. They formed in late summer 2002 and this June already their second album hits the stores. Do not worry, it was not the summer of 2002 when they first started to play on their instruments, just take a look at the list of the band members featuring Andreas Axelsson (Edge of Sanity, Marduk, Infestdead) doing vocals, Robert Ivarsson (Pan-Thy-Monium, Ashes) on guitar, Christian Alvestam (Unmoored, Solar Dawn, Torchbearer) on guitar as well, Anders Edlund (Solar Dawn) on bass, and Henrik Schönström (Unmoored, Solar Dawn, Torchbearer) on drums. Can you already guess what kind of music they play?

Veritable Swedish death metal. I am sure a lot of you are fed up already by just reading these four words but there are a few of us who cannot get enough from old-school death metal if it is played with such energy and variation. Attacking with ten furious tracks, consisting a mix of thrash and death metal, where brutality and catchy melodies are perfectly balanced. Not that homogeneous and straightforward brutal as the Vomitory-like bands, they have got more changes and twists but their base is the same. If you want me to compare them to other bands, let's put Entombed, Amon Amarth, At The Gates, of corpse Edge Of Sanity in line and definitely we could find a couple of more Swedish bands they have something in common with, but making a list like this is useless an unneccesary.

Strong, well-done songstructures but it is no surprise, considering the past of the musicians. It kicks off with a short but blasting track that is a solid, into-your-face death metal. Pretty predictable but giving the needed dash to the album. But the second track, "Grand Future Disease" is a real hit. It shows what they are really capable of. Heavy, though catchy melodies placed in front of a brutal background decorated with simple but perfect riffs and solos. And this is the soul of this album. Create something great with the basic elements. They managed! Just like with its the ferocious riffs, "Cross-Fixed" has made the perfect impression on me. All the songs are fine but cannot top the experience they gave us with the second and fifth song. This is why I only gave them a four in the rating. If they were able to make two beauties like that, why the rest of the album is just average?
The guitar sounds sometimes reminds me of Machine Head while other times Dark Tranquillity's name pops up in my mind, so they tried to put some freshness and being up-to-date within the limits of old-school. Andreas blasphemous growls, staying understandable, is just a bonus. For the massive thick sound of the album we should thank Mieszko Talarczyk (Nasum) who was the producer of the recordings and to Peter In De Betou who did the mastering of "9th Order Extinct".

"9th Order Extinct" is another pleasant, enjoyable piece of my collection. And I am sure the angel on the cover was in a better shape before listening to this album.
