I wasn't interested in the Italian metal scene before the rise of Rhapsody in '97. Since then I've got acquainted with some great bands. Sometimes I have a feeling that the "Finnish story" repeats itself, because in Finland after the huge success of Amorphis, many many cool bands appeared. From the Italian scene I can mention Labyrinth, Elvenking, Novembre, Graveworm, etc. Now here's another great and "unknown" band, How Like A Winter. They achieved that nowadays I cannot listen to any other CDs, just their debut album.

After the first listening two band names came to my mind: Novembre and My Dying Bride. November plays on his Dreams D'Azour album such a catchy, intensive, but deep and morose music. While My Dying Bride rose up, because they have similar roots, and they play the similar doom/death style (also with violins).
Maybe the debut album of How Like A Winter could get close to me, because after each slow, difficult, deep song there is a catchy one with some kind of heavy/power metal feeling. For example "XCVII" has a very deep and morose feeling, in which over the piano, the violin and "angel-like" female vocals Dust celebrate a requiem. You have to listen to this song with headphones in a dark room in order to open its depth. And after "XCVII" comes "The Night, Then Him", which is a groovy and catchy song.
The last track starts with acoustic guitar, then it changes to a slowly going violin-riff combination, then a hopeful piano part comes, which runs into a speed "mosh" and after some minutes the silence breaks and we can hear heaven-like sounds: angelic voices, pleasant, "warm" melody on piano, then suddenly comes the end.

I emphasize the sound of the record is also very good, which is not usual in this style. The only negative thing I have found in this album is that it is published by an American label called "Martyr Music Group". Thus getting hold of the album is not trivial, but I guess it's worth devoting one's energies to get it, because it could be a classic album.
