Ever wonder what a combination of Motörhead, Manowar and AC/DC would sound like? Gun Barrel isn't too far from sounding exactly like that. If they had released this album maybe twenty years ago, the world would have been on its knees in front of them. Although the album is rather enjoyable in a certain state of mind, it lacks everything one might call innovative. To put it another way: they have gathered most of the rock & roll clichés that exist. In spite of the complete lack of originality I must admit that they have managed to put the elements in good order so that it sounds groovy and certainly puts a smile on your face.

Gun Barrel are German and this is their second album. The songs are rather simple and straight forward rock 'n' metal. The singer sounds like Lemmy's softer little brother and his somewhat hoarse voice fits the music quite well. There are some songs that do stand out from the rest of the material with their catchy melodies and choruses. For instance the title track, "Roll of the Dice", "Lonely Rider" are oozing simple masculinity in all it's thinkable ways. The album was produced by Piet Sielck and his work is more or less recognizable here as the overall soundwall is both quite clear and yet rough enough. So it's not too polished which I think wouldn't fit too well with this kind of music. Guitars are crispy enough and overall outcome is quite well in balance. After having a look to the song titles I think it's quite pointless to delve deeper into analysing Gun Barrel's lyrical side. Leather, metal, girls, beer and bikes. I think that sums it all up.

While originality is completely absent on this album, predictability, attitude and a groovy combination of rock'n'roll and metal are more than present. Complexity is something that won't be found on this album but it's hardly meant to because this album is exactly the kind of album you put into the player when you're getting ready to drink and party your mind and/or ass off. Recommended for fans of not too complex heavy metal and hardrock.
