"Under A Savage Sky" marks the return of Virgin Steele guitarist Jack Starr surrounded by some experienced musicians. Joe Hasselvander on drums, Ned Meloni on bass (Burning Starr reunites!) and singing is the Israeli Shmoulik Avigal - a big surprise for me to see him again after so many years. I've seen him with Dutch bands Hammerhead and Horizon in the early eighties and he also sang in another Dutch band, Picture. I didn't know he had moved to the States (sang a.o. for the Rods), but now he turns up with Jack's new project.

On to the music... the Carmina Burana intro isn't original but effective: it gives you an idea what to expect. Already at the first song, "The Flame That Never Dies", you hear Shmoulik's voice is still as strong and Dio-esque as ever. It's inevitable to get all nostalgic with this classic hardrock/metal in the vein of good old Rainbow (Dio-era)! Due to Blackmore I was never a big Rainbow-fan, but with Jack Starr this style becomes much more appealing to me. His guitarleads are not as nerve-wrecking as Blackmore's (why do I have the feeling I'm making enemies here ;)) but he plays very melodic and beautiful - it just smoothly flows into your ear. Supported by a very good rhythm-section and Shmoulik's characteristic voice it's refreshing to hear something so classic in this time and age. "Conspiratos Sanctos" I like a bit less despite the cool drumming - I would wish Shmoulik wouldn't sing as high all the time, he has to force his voice a bit. "Cry For Dawn" is a bit faster and "Anthem For The Nations" is just that.... a real (instrumental) anthem. One of the most beautiful and epic songs is "Sharon Of The Woods", it has a beautiful slow, dragging second half with passionate vocals. "Under The Savage Sky" is again faster and sounds a bit celtic. "I Stand Alone" is a catchy song that gets stuck in my mind too, but the rest of the CD doesn't hold my attention anymore like before, not even the beautiful and sensitive "Return From The Ashes" - actually that song should've been the breathing moment in the middle and "Sharon" (the CD's climax for me) would've made a perfect closing track that will leave any old 80's heart completely fullfilled.
