Fleshgrind - what a friendly name...but sure, judging by the name you can easily find out what kind of music they may play. The Chicago-based quartet was formed in 1993 by guitartist/vocalist Rich Lipscomb and drummer Dave Barbolla. Soon guitarist Steve Murray and bassist Casey Ryba joined them and they were ready to release their first material. It was the now infamous "Holy Pedophile" demo, that sold 2500 copies. After this nice start they continued with their second demo "Sorrow Breeds Hatred... Bleed On Me" in 1995 that brought them a record deal with Pulverizer Records. In 1997 their first album "Destined For Defilement" was released, followed by "The Seeds Of Abysmal Torment" in 2000.

Their newest record "Murder Without End", consisting of 10 songs, is a 30 minutes long brutal death metal metal album. Typical, old-school styled death metal with its dark and monotone marks. They hid some twists and breaks here and there but you have to listen to it several times to recognise them (for example already in the first song, that is also the title track). The whole stuff sounds a bit too much the same and you can hardly find any hook to remember. But you can get a general impression of "Murder Without End", slowly grinding death metal with the low, almost inhuman growlings of Rich. The result of this combination is sinister, but it's no surprise in this genre.
The second half of the album proved to be the better one, with more varied and remarkable songs, like "Libertine Atonement". The slowed down riff in the middle gives the impression of time has stopped and everything turned motionless. While the song "Pistolwhipped" is more pungent with the vibrating riffs. And the album is closed with the 2003 version of their old song "Holy Pedophile".

It's strong material, living up to all the expectations of this genre, worth the attention but not a must in your collection. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with their previous works so I can't tell you if they have changed or developed in any way but as long as they are able to write songs like "Liberinte Atonement" and "Pistolwhipped", they have the potency to make a more outstanding album.
