2004 is definitely a good year for me. "Crater" ia already the third album coming out in which Andreas Hedlund aka mr V is involved. Fission is a project formed by Vintersorg live drummer Benny Hägglund and this guy did not only play the drums on "Crater" but also guitars and bass. To top this, Benny is also the main songwriter. So, that leaves vocals and keyboards/FX to mr V who certainly also added some ideas here and there though ;)

Of course there's no doubt about who sings/growls on "Crater" but still you shouldn't expect anything like Vintersorg or Borknagar because it's nothing like that. While the vocals naturally are a trademark, the music itself is much more straight forward although there are still enough twists in it to not make you feel dull. It could be summed up as melodic thrashy metal with a nice touch of death metal and aggression where needed. From the talk I had heard before I actually expected the album to be much "heavier" (or more aggressive for that matter) than it appears to me now. This is definitely thanks to mellow interludes as well as some incredible melodies. I'm just guessing, but I think that mr V is mostly responsible for his vocal melody lines himself and I just don't know how he does it. Fantastic.

Anyway, so far my attempts of a description might sound not too convincing. So let's get into detail a little and look at a few things I noticed and liked a lot:
Generally, the guitar work is very diverse. "Accelerator" does have a little power metal-ish edge and carries a riff resembling Angel Dust (!), on other tracks it's more Swedish-style (anybody wonders? ;)) etc. I just totally dig those (typical) prog metal keys (untypical for this type of music though) in "Empty Nimbus". During the bridges of "Catastrophe Consumer" I even believe to hear an influence from Dark Hall (if anyone knows this weird project around Steve DiGiorgio, I am thinking of the flute in "The Pharao And The Nomad" to be more precise) - although I realize that this is a little too far off and isn't of much help either ;). On the other hand I find the drumming on that track a bit too simplistic at times. And well, yes! With "Eremiten" there's even a song with Swedish lyrics!! I have a soft spot for that language so I wasn't surprised to get goosebumps listening to that song :)

As for the more or less negative points: The intro "Mechanism" as well as the instrumental "The Core - 118 Protons Of Insanity" are useless to me. They might be necessary from the artists' point of view to get into the mood and/or keep the connection but I never found myself listening to these sounds again. Also the production is a little weird to me, whether it's wanted this way or not. Too dry, weak, not powerful enough. Something like this. I'm not an expert - I only know what I like and what not. I got used to it though.

Fission may not have invented something totally new but the material is still strong and fresh enough to not only attract mr V's already existing fans. A sample of the titletrack is available for download on the label's website here (save target as). Check it out!
