Farmakon formed only two years ago and soon after they had put some of their songs up on the mp3.com website they got a deal with Etilist records. Quite a success for these young Finnish guys I guess. I don't remember exactly when I have heard about them for the first time but I had a few mp3s for a while and was eagerly waiting for their debut release "A Warm Glimpse". And now here it is.

I've heard a lot about Opeth comparisions (they also mention Opeth in their bio as inspiration) but I won't dig deeper into that. In fact, one of the first bands that came to my mind when I was listening to Farmakon was Sculptured (in case anybody remembers them), so I dare to throw in their name instead - even though Farmakon don't have a brass section. Either way, this is not your ordinary melodic death metal. Mind you, these are Finns. We got a Finn among our writers, so I know a little about them ;) So what you get is progressive death metal, thrashy interludes, a lot of jazzy and funky parts along with various vocal styles.

Opening track "Loosely Of Amoebas" starts rather straight forward with growling vocals. But all of a sudden one and a half minutes later the straightforwardness is over when clean vocals and first a swing and then a jazzy/funky part set in. And that's what happens throughout the album. You never know what to expect next with all the twists and turns in the songs. The rhythm section provides countless time changes and bass (in "Same" for instance) and drums ("Flavoured Numerology" - drum solo! ;) and "Pearl Of My Suffering") are also given enough room to take over leading roles within the songs. The guitar work is interesting, sometimes even beautifully soulful like for example on a part in "Flowgrasp" before it breaks out into a heavy groove again. I also like the use of acoustic guitars a lot ("Strechting Into Me", "Flowgrasp", "Pearl Of My Suffering").
To top the very good instrumental outcome, the vocals are just another plus. It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of mixing grim and clean vocals, and bassist and vocalist Marko can do them all: from growling to clean singing, from screaming to shrieking. Only towards the end of "Flavoured Numerology" (generally a great track!) there's this sick vocal part that is just too weird for my taste and so annoying that it almost ruins the whole song for me.

My personal highlights on this well-produced album clearly are "My Sanctuary In Solitude", "Flowgrasp" and "Pearl Of My Suffering". Outstanding! I see a lot of potential and really hope we'll hear more of Farmakon in the future.
