As we all know Sweden is full of quality metal bands. Falconer is certainly one of them. A band that released a stunning debut album a few years ago and an almost equally good follow-up a bit later. Now it is time for their third release "The Sceptre Of Deception". They have changed the singer since the previous album. There's nothing to worry about though, as the new singer Kristoffer Göbel is just as good as the previous singer, Mathias Blad, was. Their power metal has still some folkish touches in it. There are a few songs that carry somewhat hit-potentialish melodies, but overall the album is surprisingly flat. Some great tunes do stand out, but the rest is like an endless highway. I think I've said it quite a few times already, but I'll say it again: power metal is a way overcrowded genre. That's where Falconer become a little controversial for me. The folkish touch they have make them stand out from the rest of the genre, but on the other hand the album lacks the excellent high-points that would make it great. The album offers very few to no surprises at all, but still it takes more than just a few listens to get into. I think this is their heaviest album to date which is nice, because there certainly are enough of those flower-light power metal bands. Having had such enormous expectations towards this album I must say I am a little disappointed although there are still lots of bands Falconer still kick the crap out of.
