The massive prog metal attack from Sweden continues again. This time itís Evergrey and their fourth full-length album ďRecreation DayĒ. When you put the cd into the player, make sure you donít have anything fragile there nearby. Be also prepared to gather the pieces of your jaw from the floor. Evergrey remain as one of the most unique-sounding metal bands with their mix of heavy metal, progressive elements and haunting darkness. Some of the songs may be a little less catchy than on the previous albums, but there are still plenty of hooks and turns that simply grab you by the balls and the album as whole buries you like an avalanche. The production is once again absolutely nothing to complain about as the sounds are really thick and lush. The songwriting credits go mainly to Tom Englund and Henrik Danhage and their guitarwork is amazing once again. Englundís voice is still as hoarse and soulful as ever and itís filled with sadness and dark emotions. Rikard Zanderís keyboards adds a nice layer of emotion and shades to the overall sound. This wouldnít be an Evergrey album if there wasnít Carina Kjellberg appearing occasionally as the beautiful female voice.

The album opener "The Great Deceiver" comes right away with full speed and wonít give you a breather. "End of Your Days" starts as a little more proggy sounding, but soon kicks the snots out of your nose. Next up is a peaceful moment in a church....for a second or two it actually sounds like that, but soon the familiar sound comes again and brings serenity in the form of "As I Lie Here Bleeding". The title track crushes with pounding guitars and soothes with a mellow and catchy chorus. "Visions" is in its own way a proof of Evergreyís quality. With its straightforwardness it somehow manages to sound a bit plain, but if it was some other bandís song, it would be a killer. "Iím Sorry" is an Evergrey interpretation of a Swedish pop song and it turns into an Evergrey tune very easily. Same words as for "Visions" also go for "Blinded". "Fragments" is a bit slower one and its atmosphere is quite spooky. "Madness Caught Another Victim" is an acoustic but still a little restless tune. "Your Darkest Hour" is again heavier and filled with darkness and haunting. "Unforgivable" a slower one with some heavy but also beautiful passages. The album-ending "Trilogy Of The Damned" offers three older Evergrey tracks ("As Light Is Our Darkness", "Words Mean Nothing", "The Shocking Truth") sewed together as acoustic versions and it sounds absolutely incredible! Naturally "Recreation Day" isnít just a massive bombardment from beginning to end. There are also some slower and beautiful parts coloured by a longing for something. The album is not only heavy as hell but also like a soulful form of despair. Evergrey still have their own recognizable and unique sound. Brilliant work!
