6. Jzag

Now this is an ambitious project! All in all 10 (!) musicians were part of the recording of "Vn" and immediately bands such as Haggard or smegin come to mind who also have huge line-ups or at least a long list of guest musicians. Eluveitie is coming from Switzerland, was formed by mainman Chrigel Glanzmann in 2002 and he calls his band's music Helvetic Pagan Metal. Now what do they need 10 musicians for you might ask. Well, as you have probably already guessed, this is not your ordinary Pagan Metal band. Eluveitie mainly mixes death metal with Celtic folk and to be as authentic as possible, you can hear the most weirdest instruments on this album. What you do hear next to guitars, bass and drums are mouth harp, fiddles, Irish flute, hurdygurdy, various bagpipes, various whistles, Bodhrn.....you name it.
Worth mentioning is also that Eluveitie used an old and more or less lost language for some of their songs: Helvetic Gaulish (just look at some of the song titles).

The opening track "D'Vrit Agge D'Bitu" is merely an intro. Starting with a narration, some mystic chants and drums it is soon setting the atmosphere for the next 24 minutes. You can hear samples of wind that are preparing for the storm to come. The second track "Uis Elveti" is still very folky and the choir here simply invites to raise the horns :)
"r" and "Jzag" are two instrumentals, the first one being more or less the intro to song #4 "Lament" - and that's when it gets metal on this album. I do really like the verses with the grim vocals and the suddenly appearing folky bits....you can see people drinking and dancing around a fire there, hehe! With "Druid" it sometimes even gets a little Swedish from the death metal point of view.

It's really an interesting record with everything from grim death metal to uplifting folk. And it's not even as chaotic as it may seem, in fact it's quite easy to get into. I might not exactly like every single arrangement maybe, a few things or choirs sound out of place for me but the overall outcome is quite cool. I think fans of bands such as smegin, Finntroll, Windir, Menhir or Odroerir would find Eluveitie great.

I should not forget to mention that the MCD carries a neat booklet with basic info about Helvetic Gaulish, a full list of the musicians and their instruments and a couple of pics. It also contains all lyrics.
