Donwfall are a Finnish group that plays dark, slightly gothic rock in the vein of say, Sentenced, Charon and the like. The fact that makes Downfall differ from the aforementioned two is that their sound is closer to traditional rock and it is not quite as melancholy, but other than that the comparison is more or less reasonable. Previous to this Downfall has released an MCD called "Dark Parade" so this is their first full length album. Unfortunately the fact that this indeed is a debut album shines through at times. Downfall's main focus seems to be on guitar riffs and catchy melodies and they have the occasional, slightly howling sounding synth to back up the final outcome. So the elements used to create a melancholic atmosphere are quite typical and I think partly due to that Downfall has difficulties (who hasn't?) to raise some new ideas to sound refreshing in the genre.

The highlights of this album are definitely the rocking tune "Dark Parade" and the bit mellower "Time To Pay". Behind these two the song material is quite even with no real high peaks and luckily without any low points either. So, all in all the album consits of rather decent songs, but after a while the album gets a bit too repetitive to maintain it's interest. Jani Peippo's vocals do fit the style quite well as he sounds a bit like Ville Laihiala of Sentenced and there's definitely a certain kind of maturity to the band when songwriting is concerned. Productionwise the album is decent enough, but with a little heavier overall sound the impact would have been quite different. Now the final result is somewhat indifferent. Still, considering that Downfall are a relatively young band and this is only their second release they do awaken some hopes concerning their future releases.
