Do I need to introduce Dissection? I don't think so. Even if you are not a fan of the band, knowing at least a little bit about them is a must. They are one of the legendary bands who were the leaders of their genre in their times and they influenced many, both death and black metal bands that came after them. Their music was dark and melancholic but strongly aggressive and hateful at the same time and fans of both styles could find something in Dissection for their taste. The dark power floating around their albums caught everybody. And even if you haven't met their music so far, you will recognize how many bands have been 'isnpired' by them.

Their last album "Storm Of The Light's Bane" was released in 1995, that became the best selling black/death metal album of all time. The album was followed by several tours and only a tragedy could stop their raising way. In 1998 Jon Nödtveidt was convicted for murder and sent to prison for eight years. If the news is correct, he will be released next year and there are rumours about a new album too. But otherwise not much has been heard about the band. We can take "Live Legacy" as a turning point in the band's life. With this live album they are saluting to their past and it might also close down that period in their life…? But these are just my thoughts....

"Live Legacy" was recorded at Wacken in 1997 and was originally available as the "Frozen in Wakcen" bootleg. They promo cd contains seven songs but the official version will feature a Tormentor cover of "Elisabeth Bathory" and another recording of "Night's Blood", that was recorded in 1997 too but at Cologne. The songs have been chosen from "Storm Of Light's Bane" and "The Somberlain" albums including the intro. So basically we have only six songs left and that's not too much. The disc ends abruptly and though it is very enjoyable one can't shake the feeling of longing for more.

The sound is raw and low-tuned but still clear. I don't know how they mixed it, but the sound quality is nearly as good as it would be on a normal studio album too, just thicker - listen carefully to the drums. And you can still hear it's a live recording. The voices of the fans only appear at the end and at the beginning of the tracks but you can feel their presence in the air. The heavy, thick sound is pushing the darkness nearer to us and I don't have to try it hard to visualize them on stage.

Normally, I'm not really keen on live albums. Beside this, I have only three or four more. Firstly, the sound might be not good enough, secondly, if I want to hear a compilation from my favourite band, I'm the one person who could do that the best for my own taste but concerning "Live Legacy", with songs like "Unhallowed" or "Where Dead Angel Lies". I can only complain about its shortness.
