"Back To The Times Of Splendor" is Disillusion's first real full-length album although the band has been around for many years. These German guys around mainman Vurtox cover a very wide spectrum of all kinds of styles within metal and so a lot of people should be interested in what this band is doing. I've heard a lot about Opeth comparisons before I got to hear Disillusion for the first time and also the guys themselves refer to the Swedes as a reference. Now don't think Disillusion really sound exactly like Opeth - the comparisons apply more to the songwriting/structures of the songs than the music itself.

Anyway, how describe the music more detailed? I don't really feel like picking certain songs to comment on this time. Expect to find all different kinds of styles, from death metal to power metal, from thrash metal to prog rock. Yes, this has been done before but not always as good as on "Back To Times Of Splendor". Heavy outbreaks, clean singing, piano, acoustic interludes, grim vocals, string arrangements (just listen to the titletrack!) - all these elements form an unity on this album and tell a story. That Disillusion is an unconventional band can perhaps also be recognized in the fact that two of the songs are very long (over 14 and 17 minutes!) - but rest assured you won't be bored. Instead, be prepared to enjoy varied and dynamic music. And as aggressive Disillusion at times are, they never forget about the melody.

"Back To Times Of Splendor" is a fantastic and beautiful album which is also quite ambitious. I think especially fans of progressive music who can stand growled vocals once in a while will find this extremely pleasing. Personally, I'm (surprisingly) not as totally blown as away as I thought I would be and I cannot even put a finger on why. Simply a matter of taste I guess. Still, this album is a definite highlight.
