The German/Swedish Dionysus was formed some time in 1999 by ex-Sinergy drummer Ronny Milianowicz and now they're here to greet us with their debut album entitled "Sign of Truth". Other members in the band are Olaf Hayer (vocals, Luca Turilli), Johnny Öhlin (guitars, ex-Nation), Nobby Noberg (bass, ex-Nation) and Kaspar Dahlqvist (keyboards, Treasure Land). So, even if we are talking about a debut album, forget the idea about these guys being rookies.

The music itself is melodic power metal, not quite at it's finest but it's certainly not that far behind from the elite league of the genre. The band describes themselves as neoclassical melodies mixed with heavier stuff, whereas the record company labels them as progressive power metal. Well, you can forget about the progressive part, none of that here. Öhlin's stellar guitar work reminds me more than once of the Yngwie Malmsteen style, which I'm personally getting a little bored with, but can most certainly be noted also as a good point. Productionwise there's absolutely nothing to complain about. The crystal clear sound was produced by Dionysus themselves with Tobias Sammet as co-producer, and mixed by Tommy Newton, whom we may remember from his work with the legendary Keeper of the Seven Keys albums by Helloween, and recorded at Studio Fulda (Edguy, Avantasia).

Most of all the songs are provided with catchy choruses and slightly pompous heroic atmosphere e.g. "Time Will Tell", "Sign Of Truth" and "Holy War", but definitely not in the almost overly cheesy way Rhapsody does. The songs are quite predictable and a bit repetitive at times and mostly up-tempo with the exception of "Anthem For The Children" which represents the heavier side of the band. Dionysus also delves into the 80's heavy metal with "Bringer Of Salvation" which reminds me a bit of Judas Priest's "Painkiller" with Hayer even singing in a slightly Halfordish way at times. Naturally there's the obligatory, mediocre I'm sad to say, ballad "Don't Forget", thrown in.

So, what we have here is modern melodic power metal definitely from the more advanced side of the genre. With stellar guitarwork, solid rhythm section and Olaf Hayer, one of the best in the business, handling the vocal department, you can't go wrong. Highly recommended for fans of melodic power metal such as Edguy, Helloween and the like.
