   DELIAN LEAGUE
Day Of Question
2003
self-financed

rating: 4/5

1. The Questioning
2. Final Day
3. Days of Regret

A while ago I was pointed to this New Jersey based metal outfit called Delian League. The band was founded in early 2003 by the two guitarists David Hatfield and Richard Broadhead and "Day Of Question" is their first demo.

Melodic yet powerful (US-style) metal with hints of prog and even thrash metal is what I hear. The stuff is mostly pretty traditional metal although there's always a modern approach in the songs. Perhaps "crunchy" is a good word. They guys themselves claim to be inspired by Arch Enemy and In Flames. Well, maybe they are inspired by them but it certainly doesn't show all too much in their music. Perhaps some of the guitar leads have a touch of that "Swedish" influence but that's about it. I'm more reminded of bands such as Metallica which certainly mainly thanks to Jude Andrade's vocals though. He's not a Hetfield rip-off and also sings smoother than James but still I think it's a good comparison. A view the band obviously shares as they name him as reference too (John Bush being the other). There's imo also a slight touch of Hansi Kürsch in his voice ;o

Already the pounding opening track "The Questioning" sums it all up: heavy riffs, powerful vocals, nice rhythm changes. "Final Day" is an excellent tune and despite the song probably being the most progressive of the three, the chorus is catchy as hell. For being the "mankind's final day" this is almost a little too nice though, hehe. The third track "Days Of Regret" starts of a little calmer with only some vocals and keys and I thought, "hm, so is this going to be the obligatory ballad?" but (luckily) I was wrong. In fact, this is probably the most aggressive song on this demo. Partly at least - because the keyboards set a certain melodic atmosphere at the same time.

If you're into the style or generally enjoy a good dose of metal, do yourself a favour and check this band out. All of the tracks are available for download on the band's website.
