Dawn Of Relic hail from Finland and this is their second album. After having some kind of difficulties with their earlier record company they won a competition for unsigned bands. Now they are finally ready to end the 5-year silence that followed their debut "One Night In Carcosa" with their new full-length "Lovecraftian Dark". The album is divided in three separate parts of which the first two are the actual album and the third part consists of earlier unreleased demo-material.

Their first album was keyboard-coloured dark/black metal blended with some heavy metal. On this new album their main emphasis is still on dark metal, but there are some more rocking tunes that are somewhat reminiscent of Sentenced. Also some influences from melodic death metal are audible. The song structures are nicely complex and there's quite a bit of variation in the songs and the songs range from midtempo dark rock to really fast dark metal. After the first listen the only thing that is clear is that the album surely takes more than one listen to fully reveal it's secrets, albeit some of the tracks simply grab you by the balls the second you hear them. But once it opens up, it is a wonderful blend of different influences and some great riffs. The dark, yet moody keyboard wall stays in the background creating atmosphere and for the album to stay in balance there are some beautiful passages within the aggressiveness.

The production is very good. It is not the utterly polished kind, which I think very few would want on this kind of album. Even if it is rather clear, a certain kind of raw edge still remains on it. The drummer and the main man of the band Jukka Juntunen is responsible for most of the music and the lyrics. The grim vocals are performed by Mika Tönning (Catamenia), the clean male vocals are performed by Mikko Hyttinen (The RMS) and the not-so-grim female vocals by Kaisa Jouhki (Battlelore) and Jaana Seppänen. Lyrically Dawn Of Relic base their message on tales by (surprise surprise) HP Lovecraft. There might very well be something enjoyable on this album for not only fans of melodic death and dark metal, but also for fans of depressing heavy metal/rock.
