Once again a power metal band. And from where else than Germany. With many of the greatest bands coming from Germany, also a lot of utter crap has emerged from there. Most bands play happy power metal or muscle flavored true metal. I am enormously relieved to hear that Dark At Dawn represents neither one of those styles. "Of Decay And Desire" is the fourth album by this German power metal trio. Their power metal is not of the usual brand of double bass drumming combined with high pitched vocals and completely pointless guitar solos. Dark At Dawn's approach is much darker and especially Buddy Kohlrausch's raspy vocals differentiate them from the happy stuff. His voice has some resemblance to both JP Leppäluoto (Charon) and Taneli Jarva (The Black League). Anissa Taggatz brings some balance to the vocal department with her clear and beautiful voice.

The songs are mainly midtempo, melodic with crunchy guitars and the guitar leads seem to be more or less a strong factor in quite a few of the songs. There are some tunes that clearly stand out, like the melancholic and moody "Luna", the catchy "Forever" and "Weltenbrand" to mention some. The rest of the songs are not that bad either but the overall feeling one gets is that they're a bit too similar with each other. They do have a lot of good ideas but I get the feeling that they don't quite manage to squeeze the full 100% out of them. The dark atmosphere Dark At Dawn manages to create reminds me of Evergrey in a way, not too much musically though. Musically their dark romantic power metal has similarities to bands like Embraze and Angel Dust. Truly a refreshing surprise in the power metal family.
