I have heard of Dark Age for the first time when I got to review their last album "The Silent Republic" and I closed the review by saying that I wished to see the band live. Well, in the meantime I have seen them live (at last year's WOA) where they underlinded the good impression I got by listening to "The Silent Republic".

So now here's the newest effort, simply entitled "Dark Age". One thing is certain: Dark Age sound like Dark Age which definitely is already a praise because to have a more or less individual/original sound cannot be taken for granted these days. Having said that, it's time to point out that despite the recognizable Dark Age-sound there are differences to the last album. Generally a good thing, we don't want bands to sound all the same with each new album, do we?

So, one of the main differences you can immediately recognize are the vocals. Guitarist and vocalist Eike Freese (who also produced the album - and he did it well, I might add) performs a lot of clean singing in addition to his shouting/growling/whatever on "Dark Age". Now I'm normally a huge fan of alternating clean/grim vocals and although there is really nothing wrong with the clean singing here, I like the "The Silent Republic" more than "Dark Age". But don't be bothered about my preferences ;) A few songs are enhanced by vocal effects (such as "Fix The Focus"), on "Dare To Collapse" we can hear Tiamat's Johan Edlund as guest musician and on "My Own Darkness", an all acoustic track, Eike sings entirely clean. Nice effort but I like him so much better when he shouts.

Another thing I recognized is that Dark Age incorporated some more modern (futuristic) sounds courtesty of the man behind the synths, Martin Reichert. Just listen to "Nikita" and you will know what I mean. A little touch of Pain there.

Closing the album you will find a cover version of Ozzy's "Suicide Solution" (the band seems to enjoy playing covers although "Nikita" isn't an Elton John cover, hehe).

So, what is the conclusion? Mainly due to the increased use of clean vocals, the alternation between the heavy and brutal parts on one side and the melodic parts on the other, is much more obvious. Dark Age are still catchy as hell also and I guess their fans will be pleased and they should also gain a couple of new ones with "Dark Age". Good album!

Please note that there will be a limited edition with a DVD feat. live performances from Metal Bash 2003 and another gig in Germany plus a studio report and backstage footage. The promo copy of "Dark Age" didn't include that DVD of course, so I cannot say anything about it but it for sure sounds damn good to me!
